Trim to fill on foreign framerate

    yo

since v8 foreign framerates always have a Motion Adapter applied. is non-removable afaik.

can't apply timewarp-> trim to fill to such clips.

i'm guessing nobody has a workaround?

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

I understand that you can promote the temporal adaptor on the clip to a full Timewarp effect. Then you can configure it as a fit-to-fill, I believe.

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

    i'm not convinced that's true.

just tried promotion, started trimmer from inside Motion Effect editor.

    behaves like normal trimmer.

Never tried it myself. Did you recreate the trim to fill settings in the promoted Timewarp effect?

    It's true. it's true!

If you promote, you can apply "trim to fill" from effects palette.

    works as expected.

I finally gave it a shot and it worked for me, too. Good to know for future reference.

Hmmm I can't seem to be able to do this easily: I have a 1080p50 (proxy/offline res) in a 1080i50 timeline.

When I promote the clip, it's still ok with 200% speed, as expected (1080i50 is 25fps) but when I then add the Trim to Fill effect, the speed is reset to 100% and the clip plays half the expected speed; I can't find the proper/easy way to mod the TW parameters to double the speed after having trimmed to the desired duration. Apparently, manually editing the speed graph/value of the TtF breaks it.

    How should I proceed ?

Help ??? Is everyone really out at NAB ? Wink

-> How do I use a Trim to Fill effect on a clip that has a Motion Adapter ?

I could not find a [simple] way to use it on a 1080p50 clip in a 1080i50 (25 fps) timeline.

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

    Hi all,

Support confirmed this is by design...I'm still open for your best recommendation to apply a Trim to Fill effect (and change the clip duration) on a 1080p50 clip in a 1080i50 (25 fps) timeline without complex math.

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

I would try, dropping in your 'trim to fil' effect on the clip in the timelime, changing the 'edit graph' to 'position', then do your trim as normal. When you are happy with the edit, note the frame number in the right hand frame indicator in the timewarp control. Half that and type the new figure into the box. This will double the speed of the segment you are working on. You will then need make a new cut, at the new keyframe position in the timewarp control and remove the extra frames up to the fill point, which are present because the speed has doubled in the segment.

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

I didn't have MC in front of me when I posted that but after trying your example, the first thing that occured to me was why you would be concerned about the speed change when using Trim To Fill, A speed change is almost unavoidable when using that effect, as it locks the number of frames in the segment and lefts you stretch or compress them over time. In your example, after adding your trim to fill you could restore the speed to the original, simply by triming the segment to half it's length. With that in mind, I don't really understand what you expected when you added that effect.

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

    v-block:

With that in mind, I don't really understand what you expected when you added that effect.

I have one clip that I cut in three parts. I want to speed up the middle part and keep the first and last parts as is; obviously the cut edits must still keep matched frames (in particular the ending frame of the 2nd part must match the first frame of the 3rd part) after the 2nd part has been shortened (& accelerated)

Before adding the TtF, the frames at the 2nd edit point do match; but when I add the TtF to the 2nd segment, they no longer do, b/c TtF resets the speed to 100% before I start trimming; I agree with your suggestion, but the math is (just a bit) more cumbersome when I trim the segment by non-trivial values (1/2, 1/4, etc.)

Of course it's probably even better in this case to NOT cut the clip in 3 parts, and instead add a TW effect and keyframe the speed graph; it's just that a TtF would be faster IMHO.

time adapt your middle part anywhichway.

then do matchframe on the fist & last frames of effect. edit that from source window.

trim to fill is sometimes slightly off sometimes i think.

Re: Trim to fill on foreign framerate

You have found an example that isn't normal but in any case, I would simply use the normal timewarp in position mode, add 2 keyframes at the start and finish of your middle section, use the digital read out in the timwarp control, to make sure the 1st and 3rd sections are at normal speed (rate of change right and left should be the same between keyframes 1-2 and 3-4) and use linear keyframes if you need frame accuracy over where the effect starts and ends etc.
