Re: Any Media Composer news at NAB?

It's shameful that GPU acceleration, during rendering, isn't even on the roadmap for development. There are so many things Avid has failed at keeping current....color correction, modernized and bundled FX, independently sized app windows, etc,

I'm hoping the multicam enhancements will include being able to use Kem rolls (sequences) as sources and mixed framerates, so, fingers crossed.

This would be great. Along with a new title tool.

Re: Any Media Composer news at NAB?

Bumping. Did anyone at NAB see anything new in regard to Media Composer? A beta version of 8.9, or anything at all? The slide on this post says that the Next Gen Titler should've launched in April 2017 so I assumed it would make news at the show.

I'm rather dissappointed that the flagship editor had absolutely no new features on display at the big, yearly trade show when so much is missing or in need of improvement.

Last year I saw a version of 8.x being demoed before it was ready for release. The version that introduced Audio Ducking if I remember correctly. I was hoping that trend would continue...

From that image of the "roadmap" I can read:

Next Gen Title Tool - Launching April 2017 ?

As it is now May, I guess the Next Gen Title Tool has been launched and some Avid employee is rowing it slowly into port.

Anyway if it is being launched, shouldn't it be a on a sea-chart and not a road-map?

    Regards

Avid's development plan for Media Composer has it in an Agile release cycle where incremental changes are released frequently. I suspect there are some larger developments going on in the background as well - hopefully we will see some of those before too long.

I appreciate regular and incremental updates, after all it's what our support contracts are paying for.

But NAB is exactly the time and place for these larger developments. It's to see what's new and coming next, even in beta form. It's to attract new customers and assure current ones that they've made a smart investment. Media Composer (the current version used by professionals not the new one intended for children) was not on display touting anything new? The more I think about it, it's just a slap in the face any way you look at it.

Though April has come and gone, it would be great to hear from Avid if indeed there is to be a next-gen Title Tool released, as per the ACA - Marianna?Anyone?

This is how I feel too. I am firmly in the camp of more information more often, even if deadlines are missed. I don't want to penalize Avid Inc. for releasing that great road-map graphic. I think the users/subrcribers deserve to know what they can look forward to when they subscribe for the year. But delays are a reality, and they should be somewhat expected. However, when deadlines are missed, I think communication of the delay, and information about those delays are also necessary.

Avid has always been shrouded in corporate secrecy, and it has cost them DEARLY in its user-base and market share. People simply will not tolerate a hush-hush cover-up management style, and flock to other NLE's that are actually respectful of their customers. Currently, the leadership team at Avid are all amateurs who are faking their way through their jobs. The board of directors does not see this either, otherwise the current management would have been removed long ago. I guarantee you that the Board of Directors do not understand the first thing about this industry.

Personally, I think Avid is going to eventually move 100% to the free model for their NLE, and media composer will be EOL (merged with the free version). All resources will go toward Avid|Free, and they will make money based on hardware sales. It already looks like the free version has a better interface, and it would not surprise me if Free has a live timeline, a better title tool, and other improvements already.

Media Composer 8.X (usually newest release), Avid matrix-recommended versions of both Nvidia driver and Quicktime, Matrox Mini MX02, Self-built machine... [view my complete system specs]

I spend most of my time between New York and Los Angeles.  In Nebraska.

Without any research the last 3 "announcements/large developments" that come to mind are 6.?-64bit 8.?-4K+ and 8.?- Phrasefind/Scriptsync reunion. There may have been other milestones but none come to mind. If a new "titletool" were to appear in MC it would have to rival Boris R3D to be note worthy. Anything short of that would get the "it's about time" response! If gpu rendering acceleration were to appear would it make use of a dedicated 2nd card? The $64K question is what 3-5 features can be added to MC "THIS YEAR" that could "light up" this forum like nothing has in years?
