New Virtual Machine option for Media Composer - Late Q2 2017

New Virtual Machine option for Media Composer

Avid is actively working on a new licensing option to allow Media Composer to work in a virtual environment.  Users can just spin up a new version of Media Composer off a virtualized server.

Here is some background on the enviroment:

What is VM?  A virtual machine (VM) is an emulation of a computer system as a substitute for a real (physical) machine.  VM’s provide the functionality needed to run entire operating systems and the applications and programs that run within them. A virtual machine, usually known as a “guest,” is created within another computing environment referred to as a "host." Multiple virtual machines can exist within a single host at one time.  A hypervisor facilitates abstraction of physical hardware resources allowing users to create and manage virtual machines as well as manage allocation of physical resources.

What is PCoIP?  PC-over-IP,  is a high performance display protocol used to  deliver a virtual desktop to an endpoint device.

What is VDI? Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)  is a desktop virtualization approach in which a desktop operating system runs and is managed in a data center.  The desktop image is delivered over a network to an endpoint device, which allows the user to interact with the OS and its applications as if it were running locally.   All of the data still resides in the data center.

When will this be available?  Late Q2 2017

Sounds really great. Can't wait to see how it pans out for real.

All we need now is vritual I/O options :-)

Beta is closed on VM right now as QA and Beta has enough people testing.

Dumb question... what are the possible uses of a "virtual" MC?

    - Work: MacPro 2010 3.46Ghz 12 Cores 48Gig mem, int and ext Raids, Mojo DX, 10.12.6 - Home: MacBookPro 2.5Ghz quad-i7, 16Gig Mem and SSD OSX 10.9.5 [view my complete system specs]

The list is pretty long but here are some of them.

VMs live as a single file on a server somewhere so easier to duplicate, replace, backup, restore.

You can access a VM from a range of hardware that may otherwise not support Avid (Avid is running on the VM not the local machine)

So is this option not available for purchase yet? is it still in beta testing? This sounds like it'd be great for our studio, but my biggest question is that will/is there an option to share a blanket license or would we still be required to have separate licenses for each computer that is using the VM?

    Hey Total......

Media Composer | Cloud VM was part of MC 8.8.5 and higher.   The Media Composer | Cloud VM product allows you to work with Media Composer off a virtual machine.

For information on purchasing Media Composer | Cloud VM, contact Avid at  http://www.avid.com/contact-sales.

Avid Media Composer Virtual Environment with VMware Best Practices Guide (for system administrators) which describes the test environments used by Avid to create and operate Avid Media Composer | Cloud VM as a virtual machine. It provides details to help you select host servers and to optimally configure the virtual machines.
