Hi All, I have a very large project that won't open all of a sudden.
When I try and open the project it begins to load and seems to freeze when loading one of the bins. If I click anywhere the screen goes white and a pop up says wait for the program to respond or close the program. Well I waited quite a while and nothing so i end up closing Avid down.
Because it seems to be getting hung up on a bin I tried opening the project while holding down the option button on the keyboard to force avid to open with all the bins closed this worked once but hasn't worked since. Now if I hold the option button down it seems to hang up on my user setting.
Other projects seem to open fine. what should I do? can I find an older version of the project in the attic or something?
Thanks!
ryguy
Are you able to open the project with the media offline? What if you redo your user settings???

Im not sure what you mean by "open the project with the media offline" are you suggesting that I temporarily move my Avid MediaFiles so that avid can't see them and then try and open the project?
Also I did try choosing that default user settings and then opening the project but it didn't work. I suppose I could click create new user first and then try.
Well I temporarily moved my MediaFiles so avid couldn't see them and tried again, it didn't help. I also tried creating a new user setting, also didn't help.
what version exactlyu of MC and what OS ?
what I meant was to turn off the external drives where the media resides and try to open the project
I am using Avid MC 8.8.1 with a symphony option on Window 10 Pro.
I don't have external drives on this system, I use and internal RAID. I did temp move all the media files and tried opening with no luck.
Because it seemed to always hang up when loading this one perticular bin, I decided to move a copy of the bin to another drive and delete that bin from the project folder just to see if that was the problem. Now when I try to load the project it behaves just like it did when I held down the alt key when opening and it hangs up on the user setting. So I went in and deleted all of the avid user settings and it still now hangs up when loading the default user setting.
At first I thought that this was only happening to one project, now I have realized that it is happening to another project as well. Both projects were created in a previous version of Avid MC. So I was thinking, is there some connection there. So I tried opening another old project but it opened just fine. So back to the drawing board i guess. Just thought this might help someone else figure it out.
Also I feel fairly sure that it isn't the avid user settings anymore. Maybe there is something to the projects being created in an older version of MC idk.
Hello,
I think I have the same problem with my avid workstation. The problem I think is the nvidia driver and
the video display setting. I use a Quadro 5000 with Windows 10. If I mark the setting "dual copy engine"
and use a nvidia driver version above 353.82 avid mediacomposer freeze during opening a project (bin).
For me only version 353.82 work with dual copy engine, all newer versions freezes my avid workstation
on project startup.
So you can make a test and install nvidia driver version 353.82, after that open the project and look if the setting
"dual copy engine" is marked. If so deselect it and save your project. Now you can install a newer version of nvidia driver
and open your project again, now it should open fine.
hope that helps
Thomas
were you experiencing a freeze an any and all projects?
The weird thing is that only a couple of projects are acting this way others seem normal. It seems strange to me that a driver issue would only effect some projects and not others.
Thats the thing in some projects I have "dual copy engine" selected and in some not.
with newer nvidia driver above 353.82 the projects with selected setting "dual copy engine" freezes,
if its a project where "dual copy engine" is not selected the project opens fine.
I am using a Quadro 4000 and I can't seem to see a "dual copy engine" setting anywhere.
You can find it in the avid setting tab under "video display settings"
Thanks clipwerk! that seems to have done the trick.
Originaly I was able to get into the project only once, by holding the alt key when opening the project. After that it froze no matter what. I do have an old back up of the project on my server and I did try writing over the project with the old one and trying to open it but again only let me use the alt key trick once.
Then when you mentioned the "dual copy engine" thing I was about to roll back the drivers like you suggested then turn that setting off and reinstall the newest drivers when I remembered that if i overwrote the project with the old one on my server I could use the alt key trick to get into it at least once. So I did that and was able to turn the "dual copy engine" off and now it seems to work and open properly like it did before, but without having to play with drivers.
anyway thanks for the help!
Also I am curious what that setting is for any ideas?
