This is for people who run MC on custom built computers, I will NEVER buy a qualified system, please do not reccomend or warn me of doing this.
I've been building my own computers and running Media Composer for about a decade now. I get flawless performance, but lately ive been considering upgrading to a prosumer cpu such as a 6900k, 6950x, possibly Ryzen 1800x, or wait for future Skylake-X.
My current setup is intel 4790k @4.4ghz 32gb ram, asus z97 gryphon motherboard, nvidia 980ti. And running Media Composer 8.8.1, windows 10 home.
When I do a mixdown it looks like im getting 68% avg across 8 threads. What average are you all getting? Id be interested to know about kabylake 7700k, skylake 6700k, 6900k, 6950x, AMD Ryzen, and other current cpus.
Im wondering if I built a computer with a 6950x @4ghz would Media Composer utilize all 10 cores/20 threads? If so, that would be a substantial performance upgrade over these mainstream gaming cpu's.
Also im going to start paying close attention to how Media Composer uses all my cores while performing different tasks. Mixing down, rendering, exporting, importing, transcoding, etc.
i also swear by my own spit and gaffa tape.
sweet spot core count wise is 6 imho, only DNxHR transcodes use more cores afaik.
ryzen is not tremendous idea for us i'd think, not enough pci-e lanes for my taste.
but a dual 8 core naples machine might interest me come summer.
128 pci-e lanes? count me the f. in. memeory bandwith is amazeballs, but i don't think we need that.
we'd have to figure out wether the avx shortcomings of the zen architecture have much impact on MC performance. I figure they might.
I'm curious, what do you want all the pci-e lanes for?
I just ordered a Ryzen 1700 w/ a gigabyte ga-ab350m matx motherboard (i like compact setups). I'll keep using my 980ti but get a 1080ti down the line.
I'm expecting to overclock to 4ghz. Ill let you know how it works out. I mainly want to transcode and export faster.
i need all the pci-e lanes i can get.
got 6 pci-e devices in my main rig.
gpu, raid controller, HBA, mojo dx, additional usb, soundcard.
using 38 of 40 available lanes. couldn't push another gpu without sacrifices, someday i might wanna.
i do as much as possible via pci-e. most stable, most bandwidth.
cool thing you're trying ryzen. clock for clock comparision to intel for MC would be very interesting.

This is from my 2015 build , still rather valid results , no OC , it´s factory settings for the 4960x so above 4 ghz ( it switches to 4,12 sometimes ) and 12 times that , also notice the GPU usage

So I built a ryzen box and running media composer 8.8.1
When I started this music video Media Composer was taking forever to transcode my alexa Media, so I transcoded using ffmpeg to prores, then I consolidated those files with Media Composer. These 2k consolidated prores files werent playing so well with ryzen though, there was ocasional stuttering, mainly right when I would hit play, then would get better. My 6790k machine was playing these files a lot better.
So I am going to see if this ryzen machine plays dnxhd files better.
I also plan to overclock this Ryzen 1700 cpu higher once I get my watercooler bracket for it. Right now I have stock cooling.
Any thoughts on why full screen playback may have an initial choppiness w/ ryzen? vs intel? Transcoding seems to be going a lot faster with the additional cores.
Obviously this is unsupported hardware, and ryzen is still very new, but im looking for a technical explanation here.

you're saying transcoding alexa took ages. then you say transcoding seems to be faster.
regarding choppiness i'd make sure you're not looking at a sata driver problem.
try playback from drifferent disks, one ssd and from a mapped network drive.
is the cpu or exactly one core saturated?
I hope it will work eventually, having intel and AMD as an option would of course be great.
I'd iron out the chinks before i started overclocking

I also built my on PC for Avid and its been running pretty well with very few hiccups. It's been a bit of a learning curve but overall pretty good for me. Who is gonna stick with building their own rigs for Avid or go back to Apple in the future since they are coming out with a modular Mac Pro. Just wondering??

they will never give me what i want: 3ssds, 8 magnetic HDDs inside one machine.

I've been out of town and have not used my ryzen computer in a couple weeks. Some firmware updates (AGESA) came out for the bios (gigabyte ab350M) and havent been able to try it.
I've been on the road using my msi gt62vr notebook w/ gtx 1070 to edit. Media Composer works perfect with it.
So when I go back home, update bios on my ryzen box, and do a job with MC, I will give you an update. But to clarify my earlier issue with ryzen. Most transcoders like adobe media encoder, ffmpeg, are insanely fast with ryzen. Slow transcoding is just part of Media Composer since its working with a super old version of quicktime and that seems to be the bottle neck. MC seems to stutter and be choppy a bit when playing my timeline on Ryzen where as my intel 4790k machine had no issues. Hopefully bios update will fix this.

that's only true for imports.
i've seen MC max out octocore machines when transcoding to DNxHR.
speedwise its's aprox. dis: import<DNxHD<XDCAM<DNxHR
At this point I cannot reccomend Ryzen with Media Composer 8.8.2. My gpu is a 980ti.
Its unfortunate because I get insane performance when I transcode with FFMPEG (99% on 16 cores), or Media Encoder.
But I get a slight choppy playback every now and then within Media Composer.
I can edit on it fine if I'm alone. Its not constant, but Id probably switch to my diy intel haswell machine if I had a director coming over. I was hoping that updating my Gigabyte AB350M w/ the revised firmware with AGESA would help but it hasnt.
Also im running a stable overclock at 3.9ghz. I hope Avid does some Ryzen optimizing because these chips have insane value.
I found the 1700 cpu at $290 w/ slick deals
The motherboard was $100, and 32gb ddr4 ram was $225.
I also found a deal on my refurb corsair 115 watercooler for $75
Im considering either going back to my haswell for now, or just buying a z270 motherboard a 7700k cpu, and using all my other components. I kind of love building new computers, and it takes me less than 2 hours, to put them togther, install windows 10, media composer, and everything else to be up and running.
as i said: take the sata system out of the equation.
does it happen via usb harddrive or mounted network drive?
filter the eventlog for errors and warnings, any corelation?
different gpu?
diagnosis software like everest et al.
