Just got a comsumer ax100 from Sony - recorded 4k files and it stored the video files in mp4 format.
The issue i have is that is set up a 4k project in AVID MC8.8 and got this ! Did i set up the 4k project incorrectly or did i record using the wrong format for the file..... ?
seriously - what the heck !

Most likely it XAVC-S codec, for which Sony (Nablet), not published AMA plugin. You can try to use the Convert V4 (trial version limited to two files at once), for repackaging into mov container (very fast). Perch attempt AMA connections in MC. Alternatively recoded in other programs to DNxHR codec (Sorenson, DaVinci Resolved ....)V.
I have Sorenson.....
what file format in sorenson, would work best to convert , so that the resolution is preserved? "trying -> convert to MOV in sorenson... didn't work...
i'm getting frustrated with Avid's lack of codec support ..... i just spent over $1600 for a 4k camera,
so, what camera would output directly to avid ? in 4k
and / or :
what file format should i look for before buying a camera ?
i had a canon before HD , (not 4k) , that Avid supported, no problem / what do i do ?
Per your response: Convert V4 , ask to update .net ... win 10 complains, un-secured, etc..
keithkowal:I have Sorenson.....
I do not know what version you Sorenson, if he allows DNxHR codec. DNxHR codecs are new codecs from AVID, successor DNxHD codec, enabling higher resolution.
You can try TMPGEnc encoder, DaVinci Resolve (light version free) - allows export to MXF ATOM DNxHR, there are tutorials on YouTube ...

This is a business decision by Sony ....

There's also a plugin spefically for linking XAVC-S by Drastic Technologies, for I think $99.
The simple solution is for me - is to use Sorenson and convert the *.mp4 (4k) file to <file.mov> , it then imports
after that, into a 4k project (29.97) , NO Problem
Thanks for all comments..

On Friday, I just had this same problem. I have Squeeze, but the Convert V4, for $20, knocked out about 2 hours of XAVC-S footage real quick, as it just rewraps the files to MOV, instead of converting them all.
I have used Convert V4 to wrap to MOV files. Also the Drastic plug in for $99 allows you to link from directly within MC.

this works also !
thanks.
hi,
you just need to rewrap the files to *.mov container with ffmpeg. after that avid will link to the files and you can transcode them. its pretty easy:
ffmpeg -i "input_xavcs_file.mp4" -vcodec copy -acodec copy -timecode $tc "output.mov"
only problem is, that reading the timecode isnt that easy. you can read it from the "input_xavcs_file.xml", stored next to the "input_xavcs_file.mp4" or find it in the last bit of the inputfile. just note that the tc is stored like this:
LtcChange value="09290518"
you need to read the parameters from behind. the tc here is 18:05:29:09
you also can use ffmpeg to bring the files directly to avids mxf-op-atom norm btw.
hope that helps!
Lately ive been using FFMPEG with "another gui"
I use the prores presets. It will make prores versions of your files at the source framerate and resolution.
Then I'll ama the prores files, and consolidate them into Media Composer.
Media Composer works quite well with prores if you consolidate it.
And yes, I'm doing all of this in Windows 10.
cls105:I use the prores presets.
the problem here ist that ffmpeg will need to transcode the files an if you are not that experienced with ffmpeg you can make lots of mistakes in that step. if you just rewrap the clips, ffmpeg wont touch the codec, just change the container and you can use avids dnxhr codecs for getting the clips with untouched framerate and aspect into the system.
I have found that davinci resolve has become my go to for a lot of file conversions. Not only will it handsle some cosnsumer formats, but you can transcode it to almoist anything you want as well as enter metadata to track it later. On my last project I ran all of my XAVC-S footage thru it to transcode to DNxHD 36. After locking poicture in avid, it relinked perfectly when I conformed and colored in Resolve
Here is the next hurdle i have to overcome with this AMA stuff...
what i'm use to is exporting a ref quicktime to allow sorenson to do it's thing. so now what ? come on, this 4k stuff is messing me up !
Export to what ? obvioiusly not quicktime....
You can do Same As Source and bc its AMA footage - Avid will choose the DNX flavor you have set in your Media Creations settings (I think thats where it pulls if from) - other wise you can choose a particular DNX setting and output that way. If its just for ciient review - I usually just do Same As Source and put it into Squeeze from there.
