Reducing moire on 4k DJI footage in 1080p/25 project

I'm in a 1080p/25 project with 4K footage shot with a DJI Inspire drone. The aerial footage is super sharp to the point where I get a very noticable "moire" effect on brick walls and corrigated iron roofs. Is there any way to fix this within MC 8.8? I can bounce all this over to After Effects to fix but it would be great to fix this right within Media Composer and save some time.

Er...yes that does indeed fix the issue! Sadly not the first time that has happened to me...

    Thanks!

Having taken that on board,  I have still had occasions ( even in full green) where DJI 4K footage is too  sharp and moire has occured in a 1080 project.

Has anyone found a way to fix this ( or other over sharp footage / stills)  within Avid?

I have in the past had to resort to a 3rd party programs.

Hi, what codec do you use in avid wokflow?

I have same problem. I used transcode AMA linked clips method and I choose XDCAM 5O codec...

    And moire has occured.

Than I tried several things but nothing works, so finaly I batch import all my footage into Avid DNxHD 120 and there is much less moire.

I think this is codec problem...

I use DNxHD 85 till 185X depending on the project.

Moire isn't only on DJI but on other cameras as well.

Best thing to fix 4K drone footage. Get them to shoot HD footage instead!

Transcoding Dji 4K to DnXHR results in footage that’s not useable - lots of artifacts in high detail areas and with motion. The original footage looks fine - any ideas?

Moire is the MSG of Video. Gives me the jiggies. We all want fast fixes but where are they? Of all the correction-specific PlugIns and 3rd party tools, has there ever been one called “Moire Fixer”? That would be a real winner, imo.

Meanwhile, We all have a different footage/plug-ins/monitors/Project frame rates & sizes, but I would be glad to participate in a Moire Bake Off, to search for a crowd sourced Moire solution using 1 downloadable, problematic shot, leading to a crowd sourced vote on which solution worked best. Someone smart could organize this, even Avid could use it to drum up a new kind of community interaction.

Yesterday I was playing around with some AVX2 Ignite FX, which have controls to blur and/or offset (H or V or both) different color channels, luminance, etc. Seemed promising.

All I can say is: “No More Moire”!.

Re: Reducing moire on 4k DJI footage in 1080p/25 project

When I have to deal with it I use AE's noise reduction prior to any scaling, and turn temporal filtering on.  I then adjust the noise reduction until the image starts to develop that plastic look, back off a little from that and render.  It's not exactly fast because of the temporal filtering, but the end result is usually extremely good.

I've rescued a project that way in this past week that a colleague had just had rejected by the broadcaster.  Only seven shots, but those seven nearly cost him the gig.

I've used Boris effect's temporal blur on stationary shots and it gives a better result than plain blur. You can also use something like the Animatte tool to limit the effect to just the problem areas.

No good though if you have any kind of movement or camera move!
