Trouble importing Sony FS5 XAVC media in AMC

    Hi-

I just bought a Sony FS5 4k camcorder.  I shot my first test footage and was unable to import the media in AMC. However, I was able to import the media into Adobe Premiere Pro (latest cloud  versio 2017).  Is AMC version 8.4.0 able to read XAVC codec?  I dont want to have to update AMC, since I will be forced to buy the monthly subscription.

    Thanks

    Brian

You need the Sony AMA plugin.  Nabit has taken over development of that.

I downloaded the Sony AMA plugin.  Still unable to import or AMA link media.  Suggestions?

Did you manually select that plugin in the SOURCE BROWER? "Automatic" won't do it.

Which specific XAVC codec is it?

XAVC-I and XAVC-L should work.  XAVC-S does not work.  Sony never bothered adding support for it in its plugin, and Nablet just took over development and has not yet added support for that format.

I use XAVC WITH THE FS5 routinely with no issues.  Just have to make sure to select the proper codec prior to trying to connect to it. The FS5 uses XAVC-L.

    Thanks everyone-

So I was able to AMA link media to my project bin in AMC.  However, can I import the media into my project bin so I can reformat my SD cards without the media going offline?  I have had no luck with this so far

    Thanks

You would want to CONSOLIDATE or TRANSCODE, not import.

But I would have a copy of that media from the card, in it's original folder structure, as a backup. If something were to happen with the Avid media you'd have no way to rebuild the project.

With my FS5 footage, I make two copies of the footage, then AMA link to it during the rough edit. Prior to doing a finish edit I transcode the footage. Whatever system you develop, stick to it so it becomes second nature. You really don't want to edit using the media in the SD card. It will slow you down, as well as add risk to the edit.

Try to encode XAVC to DNxHD codec.
