Source browser wont link to H264 files

MC 8.6.4 Windows 10 (Edit 3 in my specs)

Client has sent me some H264 (.MP4) files, which I expected to be able to link to, however Source Browser says they cant be linked to.

I transferred the project, on an external drive, to my MC 7.6.4 (Edit 1 in my specs) and the files linked and played fine.

Moved back to Edit 3 and MC8.6.4 and although the bin now shows then as linked files they are offline.

    Any ideas?

You'll probably have to clarify what version it worked on. There isn't a 7.6.4.

I'm curious to know if you can play the files in Quicktime on your MC8.6.4 bay? Also try playing it on your MC7.x bay. Are these media from a specfic camera?

Re: Source browser wont link to H264 files

Update. The same external drive has another project on it with iphone linked (.mov) files. They also link fine on MC7 but show as offline on MC8.6.

Will test Tomas' suggestions and come back. I also have 2nd MC 8.6 bay (at home) which I will check on too.

It could have been worse.  You could have said it was version h.2.6.4. Big Smile

As a workaround why not transcode them on edit 1 and they open them in edit 3 ?

Re: Source browser wont link to H264 files

    Update

the project opens and the files link properly on my home bay (MC8.6.4, Win10), so the issue is specific to the setup of the laptop (edit 3)

I'm assuming it must be to do with QT, or the AMA plugins.

will look again tomorrow and report back.

Good idea Tom, thanks. That's probably what I'll do, but I'm also keen to understand why it is not behaving as it should.

Re: Source browser wont link to H264 files

    Update

So i have thes H264 files which will AMA link on edit 2 (MC7) and edit 1 (MC8.6.4) but not on Edit 3 (MC8.6.4), which oddly is the only Avid qualified machine of them all.

Edit 3 is a HP8760 laptop which I recently upgraded to Windows 10 (clean install). I have uninstalled and reinstalled MC and QuickTime and Upgraded Nvidia driver to the one that was in the Avid/Utilities/nvidia folder (362.13), but still source browser tells me they cant be linked.

Am i missing an AMA plug-in? Im stumped.

    More suggestions gratefully received.

Re: Source browser wont link to H264 files

Continuing to explore why Edit 3 wont AMA link. I am now getting error messages "Exception: A serious error has occurred! It is recommended that you restart the application immediately"

I rolled back to MC8.5.3, but that is displaying the same problem and error messages.

    Help!

Re: Source browser wont link to H264 files

This is really bugging me now. I have rolled back MC to 8.5.3 - no change

    Completely uninstalled MC

    Completely uninstalled Quicktime

    Reinstalled Quicktime

    Reinstalled MC (8.6.4)

All to no avail. I really cant work out why these files won't link when they will on other systems I have (MC7 and MC8.6), the files play in QuickTime Player ok and in VLC, so what gives?

    Can anybody suggest anything else?
