G'day
Not only does Avid drop out of IBC 2006 in Amsterdam, their "Avid Tour 2006" is not even coming to the Uk!
Now I know we are only a small little rock with a few people on it with not much of a Film, TV, Media industry on it.....Compared to the renowned countries they are going to in europe, but you would of thought maybe a quick visit would have been nice....The exchange rate of Dollar to the Pound must be pretty bad at the monent.
I have this really bad feeling that in the end the ONLY Liquid in 18 months time will be "Chrome", after the (over heard) conversations at NAB I cannot see why they would bother to keep any other liquid going.
In the end it comes down to Money and Shareholders, and no company I know sells two products doing roughly the same thing when you own the both.... you merge them, and Express will win.
Time will tell!

Walkabout,
I highly doubt that Liquid will dissapear, or be merged into xpress. Avid are strongly trying to market the 2 products to a different clientel
Avid are trying to bring a lot of Studio users over to Liquid. They will have a hard time bringing those users over to Xpress. Liquid is more of a natural path for those users.
I also think that getting rid of Liquid and only selling Chrome would be a huge mistake, one that Avid is not about to make. Chrome is the same sotfware as Liquid. the only difference is the bigger and badder breakout box (includes SDI, SDTI, etc). If they develop the software for one, why would they stop selling it to the other...wouldn't make sense, also would be hard for them to make R&D costs back...after all the Chrome user base is way smaller than the Liquid user base.
Liquid and Xpress do not do the same things....well they do, but then again, pretty much all editors do. Liquid has way more features, but Xpress has a more refined editing approach. I personally prefer the way Liquid lets me edit. Others prefer to tell people that they edit on Xpress (I guess it makes them feel better about themsleves :-)
Too bad Avid is not marketing to the UK at the moment. In my view, some of the best TV comes out of the UK. I think of shows like the Office. The American version doesn't even come close to the British version. We also enter the Promax contest. Some of the best ideas and execution of spots come out of the UK. Please don't shoot down such a great industry. :-) I am sure that Avid has not shunned the UK....they are probably just concentrating on the North American market first...
All the best

I was not running down the UK industry, I was trying to be sarcastic!
If you look at the countries they are visiting in Europe, there is only a couple that do anything worthwhile.
I have been if the TV game in the UK since 1982, and Walkabout has been using Non Linear edit suites from day one, starting with Lightworks, then Avid, we went to Fast 601, then to Silver, and have 2 Silvers, 2 Liquid 7's and will be getting a Chrome soon when a new board is finished for it. I love the products and would never go over to another product unless forced too, then I would be kicking and screaming all the way.
I just think it's a shame about the lack of presence in the UK
But both you and sverkalo have good points to make...Time will tell!
