Export from Avid, open in ProCoder, Read the ProCoder Manual....

It's hard to give you anything more specific because you didn't outline your workflow.  Are you trying to create a file for DVD or are you trying to convert something for the web, changing format to import into another editor, NTSC to PAL conversion?

You can't "Send To" ProCoder, the best method I've found is do a video mixdown of your sequence, then export a QTref out of Avid, then Add the QTref as a Source in ProCoder, then set your Target parmaters and Convert.

There are a coluple of other things but they are really complex to explain in the short time I have right now... you can try searching my username and ProCoder here and on the old forums for more info.

    Re: ProCoder 2.0 vs Sorenson

I have used ProCoder 2 for some time now...both directly with a Composer system and as a standalone.  I normally make QTRef files and take that into ProCoder.  I have never had any problems..........until now.

We have two Xpress Studio systems which also have ProCoder 2 (each with their own "dongle") but they are having all sorts of problems.  EVERY time we try to convert the files, the ProCoder progam crashes.  A trouble message would appear that said:  The movie file "" cannot be found.  Without this file, the movie cannot play properly.

I tried videos of varying lengths which ended the same way.  I also got a different error message (which still says basically the same thing):  ProCoder detected stalling in the conversion.  Possibly your source is no longer accessible...

After countless crashes, I decided to try Sorenson Squeeze through Xpress Studio and followed the instructions in the book to the letter.  After quite some time, it too crashed.

I tried rebooting the computer, restarted the software, varying lengths of video...different settings in ProCoder...nothing worked...

    Any ideas??

    Re: ProCoder 2.0 vs Sorenson

Just curious, have you updated QT to version 7 recently?

Also, is ProCoder and Studio on the same machine?  (It wasn't 100% clear from your post)

    Re: ProCoder 2.0 vs Sorenson

You can infact "Send To" Procoder, if you make a "Send To" template for it in Xpress Pro.
Here's how you do it :

    1) In Xpress Pro, go to File----> Send To----> and select the first option "Make New"
    2) In the window that pops up next, select "Auto Launch", then click the big button to its right to reveal a drop down list. Select "Add Item" and  navigate to the Procoder executable file which is usually in C:\Program Files\Procoder 2  if you accepted the default location while installation. When you are done, you should see "Procoder2.exe" on the big button to the right of "Auto Launch"
    3) THIS IS IMPORTANT - Make sure you select/tick the "Auto Load Exported File(s)" option. This will ensure that the sequence is loaded into Procoder.
    4) Also ensure that the "Export Setting 1" option is selected and that the button to its right says "Quicktime Reference". I'm sure I dont have to explain the options settings for making a QT Ref file :)
    5) Now click the "Save As Template" button at the bottom left of the box and you will be taken to the "Send To Templates" directory where you must select the "Encoding" directory. Name the file "Procoder" and hit save. A file called Procoder.stt will be created in the Encoding folder.

Now you can select any sequence and go to File---->Send To---->Encoding---->Procoder, and a QT Ref file will be created and sent to Procoder, where you choose your output settings and convert it !!

Like xyedit said, I think its better to do a mixdown if you are using multiple resolutions on the timeline, before you send to either Procoder or Sorenson.

    Re: ProCoder 2.0 vs Sorenson

One machine is updated to Quicktime 7 and one machine is not.  We are getting the same error messages on both.

ProCoder IS on the same machine as Studio...with a QTref, it would have to be...wouldn't it?

QT7 is not supported on Avid for PC at the moment.  Here is a similar thread

Geeked [8-|] Re: ProCoder 2.0 vs Sorenson

I found that both machines were updated to QT 7...I have now uninstalled QT7 and have reinstalled 6.5.2.  I am in the process of exporting & ProCoding on one machine and "squeezing" with Sorenson on the other... I will update as soon as I see that it actually worked...

    Thanks...

I have now used both machines and both ProCoder and Sorenson Squeeze and they both worked.  Problem solved!  Thanks!

I did notice that Sorenson truncated a two hour video at approximately one hour...is that a known limitation?
