    Yosemite vs. El Capitan

I'm mostly happy using MC 8.6.1 on Mavericks, OS 10.9.5. Mostly. The AFIFO_TAKE_UNDERRUN bug is killing me and seems to be tied to 10.9.5. So I'm thinking of upgrading the OS, which I generally do with some trepidation.

Fielding opinions on whether I should upgrade to 10.10.5 or 10.11.5.

    Thanks in advance.

Personally, I find El Capitan better. But that has more to do with the OS in general than working with MC.

We are runing 8.6.1 on 10.11.5 and feel it's pretty solid.

Most of our systems were on 10.9.5 for the longest time.  A month or two ago I went ahead and upgraded them all to 10.11.5.  We run Avid 8.5.3.  I haven't noticed any problems.  I think you should be good.

Two votes for El Capitan. Thanks guys.

Have you seen any AFIFO_TAKE_UNDERRUN errors while runnin 10.11.5?

For what it's worth, I have been pushing MC 8.6.x pretty hard on 10.10.5 for a few weeks and it's been rock solid. Very happy here. I can't remember a crash, honestly.

@funckdren: I recommend 10.10.5 and skipping El Capitan altogether. Sierra's looking far more promising.

Currently using 8.4.4. Haven't experienced your AFIFO_TAKE_UNDERRUN issue, but 8.4.4 does do the "Quicktime_OPServer (not responding)" crash on linked (not transcoded) clips.

    Re: Yosemite vs. El Capitan

Clone your 8.6.1/10.9.5 drive twice. Upgrade one to 10.10.5 and the other to 10.11.5

Test run each for issues including needed software being placed in the "incompatible software" folder.

The "loser" of the MC/OS shoot out is the next candidate for the Sierra test run!Geeked

In place upgrades are not really a great idea. To do a real comparison you should start with a barebones clean os and install the Avid MC App on top.
One never knows if installer apps do any OS specific tweaks as part of the install.

Maybe, but if you don't have time to start over everytime, this post-install maintenance has always worked for me:

    1. Use OnyX to:
      a. Repair disk permissions
      b. Clear system and user caches

    2. Remove OpenIO_VirtIO.acf.

    3. Disable Fast Scrub, or tweak MC's audio settings to support it.

After that, it's whatever pops up on a on a case-by-case basis.

Well when you are deploying and supporting couple of hundred + systems like we are, we need to get this as bullet proof as possible so always a clean install of everything to start with. No time for whatever pops up.

Hmmm... then I hope you're re-imaging every night.

I've been running Media Composer 8.4.5 on El Capitan  for ages and had no problems. It's replaced Mavericks as my favourite operating system. Sierra looks promosing too!
