    audio punch in tool strangeness

After many hours of pulling my hair out wondering why sometimes the punch in tool worked and sometimes it didnt.. I happened upon the answer.  When my digibeta deck is switched on and sending an image into the SDI A IN - the puch in tool works (set to analog xlr).  When I switch the deck off, I get no audio in..

Strange and very annoying!  Presumable someting to do with genlock?  I'm also unable to capture video from my digi deck as i get the 'No Valid Video Signal' - perhaps a linked issue?

Avid is this something you're looking into?

if anyone else is wondering about this.  It still doesn't work on 8.4.4 UNLESS you have an input signal going into the dnxio.  I've hooked up a black+burst into my composite PAL in.  Punch-in tool now works as normal.

Re: audio punch in tool strangeness

Unfortunately it still doesn't work even on 8.5 unless you have connected a video input signal which is the same standard as the project. That's annoying when you often have to switch between HD and SD or progressive and interlaced projects...

Is the front Mic-XLR working for you? Or do you use the four analog inputs with an external Mixer?

    I can`t get the Front-Mic-In to work.

Re: audio punch in tool strangeness

Normally I use the 4 analog inputs with an external mixer, "classic 4-track broadcast style".

I just tested with a microphone connected to the front input, and doing an audio punch-in – no problem. In the "Blackmagic Desktop Video Utility" you have to select "Microphone" as the audio input. With a good cable Smile and phantom power selected (if needed) it should work.

    Hope that helps!

When you record with the Front-XLR, do you use CH1 in the Audio Punch-In Tool???

I always get this error: Exception: StreamingPlayConsumer::ExecutePass TIMEOUT

Re: audio punch in tool strangeness

    Hi Schnittkontor_HH,

In the Audio Punch-In tool I used input channels 1 and 2 and the Mic signal was present on both channels.

I assume you witness the same problem I have - there has to be a video signal connected to the (SDI) video input AND this video signal must be the same format as the Avid project e.g. Project is FullHD 1080/25p the input signal also has to be a FullHD 1080/25p. In this example HD with 50i won't work (workaround could be changing the project settings to your available input signal). Or as Avid suggests somewhere, shortcut SDI-In with SDI-Out (which i find stupid but also works...). With nothing connected I also get the "...StreamingPlayConsumer...TIMEOUT...".

    Hope that helps!

    Hi All,

This is a known issue (that you must feed in video for audio punch-in to work), and we are working with Blackmagic Design to resolve it in a future release.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

    Hi,

looks like connecting a video source is no longer required. New in MC 8.6.0 with BMD desktop video 10.7.0.
