Export .DPX RedLog Colorspace 4K Media

We shot on Red Dragon and I edited on Avid DNxHD175X 1920X 1080 imported files. The final output is meant  for theater. The colorist will color the RED files at 4K in Resolve (I know how to link back to RED footage and create AAF for Colorist).

My VFX specialist has asked for the clips he needs to work on  transcoded to .DPX RedLog colorspace 4K files. Is it possible to export linked R3D clips transcoded to .DPX RedLog Colorspace in 4K from Avid, or would I have to ask the Colorist to export them for me from Resolve?

    Thanks

    Here's what I'm being told:
Yes you can. Create a project that matches the XY resolution of the original R3D file. Link (AMA) to the shots. Set source color and gamma as requested by VFX. Load each shot into the timeline and AMA File Export, select DPX and settings. Do not AMA export from the bin as the color space is wrong. Once you make a sequence you will want to manage whether it keeps it original filename, timecode and needs to be done manually.  I have found it easier to create a sequence of the selects, conform in Resolve, and export as “sources” maintain original resolution.

    Thanks Job Ter Burg,

I  have Avid MC 8.3 and I have converted my 1920 X 1080 offline project to a high res 4k DCI Flat project. I have also linked my sequence to the original R3d Files. I see that the options under "AMA File Export" have a setting called "Set to Highest Scaling/ Quality (Override Media Creation Settings) ". So, I am wondering that instead of having to create a new project etc, once I set my Color Space and Gamma curve settings under Source Settings based on what the VFX guy wants (currently they are set to DragonColor2 and RedGamma3), if I just tried to export the AMA Linked RED File from my sequence and chose the option for RGB 16 bit (the best available), Levels - Full Range and Set to Highest Scale / Quality, would I be able to acomplish whats is required?

This saves me creating another project etc.

    My source responds:

Once you’ve gotten this far, and you changed the source settings to your desired color/gamma space, make sure you refresh the sequence and that all the clips have those source settings applied. At this point, you could export as DPX – the requirement that is not mentioned is:

    1. File naming convention (sequence name or original source clip)
    2. Timecode of DPX files? (Orignal source timecode or sequence timecode)
    3. Frame count – start at 0, 1, or other?
    4. Each shot into their own folder?
    5. Etc.
Depending on the requirements, this needs to be done manually in Media Composer. Resolve can have settings to do all this. As far as “set highest quality” this applies to RAW files like Red, and this means it will be set to “FULL debayer quality regardless of what might be set in media creation.

Thanks Job Ter Burg, I reached out to my VFX specialist, and he gave me the answer to some of the questions, such as he wants frame count to start at 1001.

I don't see an option to choose "Orignal source timecode or sequence timecode", even though you have mentioned it. So, I am choosing to export the file name as the original source filename, to make sure we are able to recognize and match by filename at least. Do you have any thoughts about this?

Lastly, Avid doesn't save my setttings  for AMA File Export, not even until I close it. This means, I have to set the settings each time I make an export - I have to make about 20 exports, so its not so bad, although I did catch myself making a mistake once or twice.  I can see how this can be a big issue if one had to do many more exports. I can't understand why Avid doesn't remember the settings from the previous time that popup was used and the save profile option is disabled.

    Hi Job Ter Burg,

I am stuck in a very strange problem. I exported DPX files using the AMA File Export box, and chose "Set highest quality” for the export since I had linked RAW RED Files and I wanted to export them at Full RED Reslution. I happily sent off the DPX files that were created to my VFX person. After working on them for a day, he realized that all the DPX files had the resolution 1000 X 540 !!!! That is not even VGA resoolution. The pop-up for the AMA File Export doesn't have  many options, how coould I possibly do this wrong? I have been searching on the Internet for this problem but to no avail. My VFX guy recommends I drop the DPX route and just send him DNxHD files, but I would certainly be losing resolution then. Besides, I dont just want to give up. Why would Avid Export "1000 X 540" files when I am asking to AMA EXport to DPX set to highest quality??? It is very frustrating as my VFX guy just lost a day of work and is sitting idle until I send him new exports and we are crushed on time.

    What did I do wrong?

That's really strange. I just exported a test HDV sequence to DPX, told it to scale to full quality, and it correctly produced a 1920x1080 file sequence. Just for grins, what do the video properties for the Red file look like from within MC? Are you sure you're not somehow exporting proxies?

OMG! I worked with my proxies setting on and set too 1/16. I thought proxies are only meant for viewing purposes and nothing else. I only ever thought that proxies are for viewing purpose but do not effect anything on th export side. None of the tutorials and documentation that talk about using proxies for ease of offline editing, ever mentioned the disaster they can be on the export side.

I exported AAF file for my colorist (with link to Media) who will color in Resolve and DPX files + DNxHR 444 files for my VFX specialist. Are you suggesting that my AAF files, DPX files and DNxHR files are all referring to the proxies and being sent out  with 1/16 of the resolution? If so, I will have to generate everything for everyone again. Can you please confirm that to replace proxies all I have to do is tun proxies off on my format tab?

Please confirm as soon as possible.

    Thansks

Re: Export .DPX RedLog Colorspace 4K Media

    hi DStone,

To clarify, when I meant proxy, I just mean setting the "proxy" setting on the format tab on, so that I am viewing 1/16 of my linked RED files. I did edit on Avid DNxHD 175X files, but then linked back to the original RED files for the export to colorist. but since I was having a hard time using Avid with linked RED files on my timline, i set the "proxy" setting in the format tab to 1/16. So, when you say proxy, do you mean "proxy" as in whats set on the format tab to work with linked RED media, or do you mean the proxies i used for offline edit. If it is the later, then NO, my timeline is linked to the RED media. But, if it is the former, then YES, my "proxy" setting was turned to 1/16th to be able to work with LInked RED media, when I did the export to DPX, to AAF, and to DNxH44.

Does the "proxy" setting on the format tab, have any impact on exports?

    My source tells me:

Yes, unfortunately the proxy setting in the format tab of the project window affects the AMA export for DPX at least. This is not a great design/implementation as the user is not aware of this setting when exporting. The “set to highest scaling quality” only refers to, and overrides. The setting in the Media Creation settings. Setting your project to OFF for proxies will rectify this for export.

Re: Export .DPX RedLog Colorspace 4K Media

    Hi Job Ter Burg,

Thanks for clarification. I can also report that the proxies affect the Export to DnxHRs as well. I exported DnxHR444s again with Proxies off and even though the file size is "exactly the same " as compared to the exports with Proxies On, adding to the confusion, the difference in the quality is clear to the eye. I also ran a binary file compare between the two files just to be sure (since the file size was same down to the byte) and file compare also shows there are numerous differences.

At this point, I wont trust the AAF Export either (as I cant get clarity from the research I have done on the Internet about this), and re-export everything for the Colorist as well as the VFX Specialist. You are right, this is a rather poor design/ implementation and can really cause serious issues. If I didn't double check the DNxHR 444 quality as well with the proxies off, all my VFX would have been done on 1/16 res and we are intending cinema output.

    Hi Job Ter Burg,

    On further Thought:

Can your source confirm whether an AAF created for Resolve with RED files on the timeline and exporting linked media, would be affected by proxies set to 1/16 as well? The Linked Media Option generates an AAF File, a bunch of MXF Files in Avid MediaFiles Folder, and I handed them to my Colorist along with all the original RED Media. So, my worry is what are those MXF Files doing in the middle? Are they affecting what the Colorist sees when he pulls up the RED Files in Resolve via the AAF?

The AAF render takes several hours so it will be very helpful if the proxy option doesn't affect those exports and I dont need to re-render those for the Colorist as well.

    Thanks much,

    Swati
