Supposed 25fps After Effects Quicktime reading as 20.98 fps via Avid AMA

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone might know what's going on here... I have received a quicktime file from an After Effects animator that is supposed to be 25fps, but reads as 20.91 fps in Quicktime  X and 7 and 20.98fps when linked to via AMA in Avid.  It comes into Premiere and FCP as 25fps and I can successfully import the file into Avid as 25fps Avid Media.  Does anyone know why it shows up as these odd frame rates in Quicktime and AMA?  I know it's probably more of an After Effects/Quicktime issue, but just wondering if anyone else has come across this.  The main problem I have with this situation is that I can't edit the ama-linked quicktime into the avid project and thus the film can't reliably be graded using the original file.

If QT reads it as 20.xfps, then that's what it is. The AE editor either has the project set to that framerate or their export profile is set that way.

Thanks, BLKDOG.  I wonder why it opens in Premiere CC and FCP 7 as 25 fps with no warning of any sort.  I also thought I'd get a warning importing it as Avid Media into a 25fps Avid project, but perhaps not.

What Codec is it? Could it be a long-GOP conversion issue?

It says it's Apple Animation 1920x1080.  It's funny, in Quicktime 7, under "Playing FPS" (only available during playback), it says 25!  This is very strange.

Actually, the "Playing FPS" speed fluctuates wildly, but tends to snap back to 25 a fair bit.

Does it have any audio attached?  Not likely, but it can mess things up.

You could use QTChange to alter the framerate if in fact it's a 25 fps file.

Or you can use the console command "ignoreqtrate true" and import the QT file so it will play without trying to adjust the frame rate.  Of if you want to use AMA, see this

Must think of something clever to go here...

I've seen that in QT before. What does QT7 say for a frame rate?

    Again, what codec is this?

It does have audio attached.  After Animation codec, it says MPEG-4 HE AAC (which I've never seen on such a file before).

I'm not familiar with QT change, but will look into it.

I'm a bit wearing of console commands, but will look into it as well.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

The Quicktime Frame rate is 20.91 in both Quicktime X and 7.  It's Apple Animation Codec.

Howard is right. It sounds like the audio bit rate is what is confusing the issue. The console command is a good one for your arsenal so don't be afraid of it. AMA should also solve this.

Re: Supposed 25fps After Effects Quicktime reading as 20.98 fps via Avid AMA

I'm going to see if the production is fine grading the Avid MediaFiles.  If so, I think I will just import the file as Avid Media.  It seems to come in fine as 25 fps (without using the "ignoreqtrate true" console command).  When I edit it into the timeline, it has no motion adaptors on it.  If, on the other hand the colourist wants the original files, I will use the console command for ama.

In QT7 the "FPS" is the part you are interested in, the "playing FPS" is what it's currently doing and will fluctuate depending on the ability of your computer to play the file back.  Try playing something back you know your system is clearly not capable of and you will see this drop and the video stutter like mad.

When I edit it into the timeline, it has no motion adaptors on it.
If you use File->Import, that NEVER generates Motion Adapters, it will always bake in a frame rate conversion you cannot undo. It will list in the bin as 25fps as long as you imported into a 50i or 25p project.

So when you write "it seems to come in fine", are you absolutely sure that there are no duplicated frames?

This is very good to know, Job.  I am not sure there aren't duplicated frames, so will investigate.  My ideal fix would be to get a quicktime with proper frame rate, but that is proving to be very difficult.
