    Grass Valley HQX codec installation

    Greetings,

There are a couple of threads going on regarding using Grass Valley HQX codec to export from MC to other applications, such as Squeeze, in order to work around Quicktime limitations. Now, I'm pretty much ignorant about how to accomplish this, so I thought I would inquire about how this might be accomplished. Can some one walk me through it, or point me to a descriptive procedure?

I've located the GV codecs and have the 7.31 installation pack. I've installed them to wherever it is they go, but from there I have to admit I'm baffled. I'm just a hobbiest, not a daily user of MC.

Let's say I've got some GH4 3840 x 2160p video want to export from MC over to Squeeze so I can provide  a viewable file for my early adopter friend with his new UHD Samsung tv. How do I accomplish that?

I can easily AMA link and get the expected stuttering play back.

I can successfully transcode to one of the MC DNxHR codecs and get nice playback and editing, again as expected. So far so good.

Here is where I scratch my head. Now what? If I export the sequence I get the "export as" and can select some presets, or I can select the "options" and make some more choices, including an array of "export as" formats, such as OMF , Quicktime Reference, AAF, etc. Quicktime Reference obviously doesnt' work, and I don't know much about the alternates.

Likewise, again from a sequence, I can select Transcode, pick my raster mimensions and select various DNxHR MXF codecs. Those all work fine, of course.

I'm just not seeing anything in either of these routes that looks or feels like it might allow me to select the Grass Valley codec.

    I'm baffled.

    Best Regards.

You can only export the GV codecs as avi files -- and you may quickly bump up against the 2GB avi filesize limit.

Select UHD as format , select Quicktime file, click the custom video tab , scroll down to GV HQX , for audio select 48 16 and , I assume , stereo

I do everything I can to avoid quicktime exports -- but that's no excuse for my passing on bad information.  Sorry about that.

    Hallo Thomas,

triggered by this discussion and the one about export to DaVinci Reslove, I downloaded and installed GV HQX codec. However, so far I am not able to successfully encode any UHD video. Itried from within Media Composer and got a Media Composer error: Exception: The QuickTime movie could not be made fast start because of an internal error (1)".

If I load a 1080P file into Quicktime and export with GV HQX as UHD, I get a QuickTime error: Error - 108: An unknown error ocurred.

Any idea? Or any specific setting necessary?

Re: Grass Valley HQX codec installation

Hi Joachim, I´ve only done this with UHD media on UHD projects and it works well here, also cross platform if the codecs are installed on both sides.

Re: Grass Valley HQX codec installation

    Thomas,

thank you very much for your tutorial. In between I managed to export UHD from Media Composer using the GV HQX codec. I had an UHD timeline with a few testclips on it and exported clip by clip and a sequence of a few clips.

In a second test, I have imported a 720P50 sequence from an ordinary HD-project and transcoded the whole timeline to UHD (3840 x 2160) using DNxHR.HQ codec. I have then relinked to the UHD video files and exported this nes timeline as UHD using the GV HQX codec.

All went fine without the former described errors. Probably they came up, because in my initial tests the source video was not UHD but HD 720P50.

BTW, Media Composer can export MPEG4 files in UHD as well. I have used a modified setting. I enclose two screenshots of my settings.

Re: Grass Valley HQX codec installation

Hi Joachim , nice that the tut got you up and running and interesting to see that also mp4 worked for export , hadn´t tested that myself, might be very good info for those sending out customer previews in full size.

I´m sure that lots of more things is coming , just let´s hope that it won´t take too long until the DNxHR codec is Quicktime compatible , and nice to be aware of these other workflows meanwhile.

Re: Grass Valley HQX codec installation

Thank you for all this information. I will give it a go. At the moment I'm struggling with iLok issues. Everytime I install or uninstall the GV codec MC has issues, as I've described in another thread. I've yet to figure out why.

    Thanks again

Just for information to users who are interested in vonverting Sony UHD-files (XAVC Intra, as from Sony Z100) into Apple ProRes. I have successfully used ClipToolz Convert for conversion on a Windows workstation. You can get it here: http://www.cliptoolz.com/
