I hope I'm not asking to reinvent the wheel, but I've not yet found a satisfactory answer in the forums, the documentation, or elsewhere online (or at least nothing that is clear to someone as technically bewildered as I am). I've been looking all afternoon.
Here's what I want to do: I want to preview my timeline playback onto an external HD monitor. I have installed a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card, and I have read vague references to it being compatible with MC7.0, but have not found any explanation as to how to get Avid to recognize the Blackmagic card (or vice versa). There is nothing listed as "Available Hardware" on my Avid system. Is there something I need to do on the Avid end or Blackmagic end, or both? Or is what I am hoping to accomplish even possible given my current setup? If so, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to the right documentation.
Thanks!
Hi Scott. This is probably a stupid suggestion, but did you download and install the driver for the card and after that restart the computer? Given that it is pci-e the computer has to restart with the drivers in place before it even notices the card in the OS. Drivers can be found here.

Thanks for responding. It's not a stupid question given my limited technical prowess! But yes, the card's driver is installed (and actually has been for quite some time) and I know the PC is interfacing with it properly, as far as I can tell. In fact I recently checked to make sure that the driver was up to date. I just can't find any documentation on how to get Avid and the Blackmagic card to acknowledge one another. I've gone through all the logical places I can think of in both Avid settings and the card's setup panel (which is pretty minimal), but don't see anything obvious that can be done.
Too bad, it was the simplest of solutions. What I know is when I start one of my sets with a breakoutbox, be it the matrox mini02, the aja kona or the nitris, Avid shows what is connected in the title of the Window. For example the windowtitle of this avid suite reads "Avid Media Composer MX02 Mini". Then when I click the Video Output tool in the settings, the Matrox video menu pops up. But these breakouts were all incorporated in Avid in an earlier stage before they opened up to the rest of them, so things might be different with newer devices. To me it sounds like either a setting problem in the Blackmagic menu or a missing driver connecting your Blackmagic to the Avid. Could you elaborate a little on the physical connections between your PC and the monitor, and the settings available in the Blackmagic menu? I'll try to contact a friend of mine who has a Blackmagic card and ask if he ran into these problems. Oh and I found this:

So it should be possible. And this thread may be of interest. It seems not all blackmagic driver work with Avid, so you may need to head for the driver archive at their site

hmmmm....I'm using BMD monitoring products on two computers for external monitoring and both work with "Desktop Video" v10.1 drivers. One system has a BMD Thunderbolt mini-monitor and the other system uses a BMD USB3 Ultrastudio SDI.

Did you have MC installed when you added the BM card and the BM drivers? If not the BM drivers will not have installed the Avid specific files.
It maybe worth uninstalling the BM drivers and re-installing them.
It should just work. I presume the BM control panel can see the card ok?

Here's one more I caught in another thread
Have you inadvertantly turned off your IO with the button right hand side of the audio meters above the timeline?

That appears to have done it! I uninstalled and installed a newer version of the BM software, and Avid seems to recognize it now. I've not hooked up a device yet though, so that will be the next text. Thanks!
