Yes [Y] New Mac Pro officially qualified for Media Composer 7.0.3 or 6.5.4.1

Great news!  Avid is pleased to announce support for the new Apple Mac Pro Workstation for use with Media Composer and Media Composer with the Symphony Option.  These editing applications now support the new Apple Mac Pro Workstation running the Apple Mac OSX 10.9.1 (Mavericks) operating system.

Note: Mac OSX 10.9.2 is currently being tested and not approved at this time.

IMPORTANT: External Audio Input device required. The new Apple Mac Pro Workstations do not have an onboard audio input.  A “core audio” input device is required for Media Composer to launch. A separate USB or Thunderbolt device with audio input hardware such as an Avid Mbox will be recognized as a “core audio” device by Mac OSX and must be connected. Avid is working to resolve this issue with a software patch which is expected to be released in early Q2 2014.

    Software Version Requirements:

    Media Composer 6.5.4.1 or 7.0.3
Symphony 6.5.4.1 or Media Composer 7.0.3 with the Symphony Option

    Operating System Requirements:

    Mac OSX 10.9.1

    System Specifications:
3.5 Ghz 6-core or 3.0 Ghz 8-core or 2.7 Ghz 12-core Ivy Bridge CPU with...

    16, 32 or 64 GB DDR3-1866Mhz ECC memory (4 DIMMs required)
Dual AMD FirePro D500 or D700 graphics
    Mac OS X 10.9.1
A separate USB or Thunderbolt device with audio input hardware that is recognized by Mac OSX as a “Core Audio” device must be connected

    Examples include:
    An Avid Mbox
Apple Thunderbolt Display with monitor input
Avid Mojo DX and Open I/O devices are NOT recognized by Mac OSX as a “Core Audio” devices
Avid ISIS 1Gb and 10Gb (via a Thunderbolt expansion chassis) connections

    I/O Devices tested:
Avid Mojo DX with thunderbolt adapter- does not fulfill Core Audio device requirement
Avid Pro Tools MBOX (USB powered) – fulfills the requirement for a Core Audio input needed for MC launch
Promise thunderbolt storage (Pegasus Raid R4/R6 and Pegasus J4)
Apple Thunderbolt Display with microphone input- fulfills the requirement for a Core Audio input needed for MC launch

    Sonnet Expansion Chassis:
    Sonnet Echo Express SE II

    Magma Expansion Chassis:
    Magma ExpressBox 1T
    Magma ExpressBox 3T

Sonnet and Magma Thunderbolt Expansion chassis with:
Atto R680 SAS adapter to Avid VideoRaid
    Myricom 10Gb Ethernet
    RED Rocket video accelerator

Regarding the audio input issue, I noticed in the attached PDF, it says fixed in MC 7.0.3.1. Is that version available yet?

    • Note: Audio input workaround required for MC 6.5.4.1 and 7.03. Apple thunderbolt monitor with microphone input or Avid MBox will work. Avid Mojo DX or OpenIO device will NOT work. Issue fixed with MC 6.5.4.2 and 7.0.3.1

I see the Nitris DX is not supported... Does this mean it's EOL'ed for the new Mac Pros?

If Nitris DX is in fact EOL, I hope Avid will allow for monitoring with the the HDMI port.  I noticed the guideline stated only 2 monitors supported right now.  The spec I am wondering about is which processor configuration would be best?  Do we throw more cores at it or the higher clock rate?  My guess is to go with the 8-core for the best of both worlds.

Not so much EOL. The issue to me seems to be that the DX-Thunderbolt connection does not have enough bandwidth for the Nitris DX. The DX-Thunderbolt solution was only ever blessed for Mojo DX. Since all you have in the new MP is TB, that is the limitation right there.

Let me see what I can find out. My best guess is that thet PCI-TB conversion implies a slightly smaller bandwidth than you would get on a direct PCI connection in a blessed configuration, and that this affects performance, most notably the one where the Nitris DX's hardware codecs are being used.

Re: New Mac Pro officially qualified for Media Composer 7.0.3 or 6.5.4.1

As far as I know the Nitris DX uses a 4 lane PCIe 2.0 card to connect to the computer. The Thunderbolt 2 spec allows for 20Gbps which is equal to a 4 lane PCIe 2.0 bus. I'm not sure why this wouldn't work. It would be unfortunate for me to have to sell my Nitris DX :(

it's hard to believe the Adrenaline connected with a Firewire 400 cable and worked.

    Abeyta:
    spec
Spec is spec. Then there's actual practice.

Dave Colantuoni wrote on the Avid-L2: "The Nitris DX will not work with a T-Bolt adapter.  We did test this and there are technical limitations disallowing Nitris DX to work with a T-Bolt adapter."

    Abeyta:
Adrenaline connected with a Firewire 400 cable
First of all, that did not work nearly as well as Nitris or Nitris DX, both of which are much more powerful and much more responsive. Second, it did not have on-board DNxHD codecs, it was a completely different approach to the BOB design. Incomparable.

There's gonna be a lot of unhappy new Mac Pro/DX owners. Apple has sold a ton of these machines already. The Apple store still has a month wait for new orders.

Davinci Resolve screams on the new Mac Pro and CS6 works great too. My new Pegasus R6 Raid is getting over 800MBs via Thunderbolt 2. Overall very happy with the new Mac Pro.

Mac Pro users have had many reasons to complain for the last 4 to 5 years. Mostly because all of them were screwed by Apple. And now Apple chose to abandon PCI. Not Avid, Apple did. Just saying.

Also, Avid already tested TB-connected DX boxes with iMacs and Macbooks, and those tests resulted in the qualification of only the Mojo DX, not Nitris DX, so that writing was pretty much on the wall.

Do I like that? No. Could it be foreseen? Yes.

have someone out there tried the sonnet TB boxes?

I have seen that Magma certified the Nitris DX with there T3 Box.

I still hope that i can keep my Nitris DX.

With the certification of the new Macpro I would expect some sort of announcement regarding development of new hardware. With that I mean information wether or not Avid will invest time and money in developing a thunderbold I/O alternative to the Nitris DX or we will use AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic etc only (with drivers for windows on HP Z series workstations with thunderbold?)

Of course I know about the NDA's and speculation restrictions.. but it seems fair to me that Avid gives some information regarding what people that are thinking of buying a new Macpro can expect.

And from that perspective (like Avid did with firewire based i/o) at some point in the future information on an EOL date for Mojo and Nitris DX should also be given. With Apple's hardware decisions again the writing is on the wall.

Could very well that Avid so far has only tested (and not qualified) with their own TB-DX connector (which is qualified for Mojo DX but not Nitris DX).

    Hope someone will clarify.

    Job,

Maybe I shouldn't be wasting my time on a detail like this but why didn't Avid wait until NAB and/or MC/Symp. 7.0.4 with audio input fix releasse inc testing a Nitris DX connection solution before releasing the new Mac pro certification?

Not that it makes much difference but I wonder if there is a commercial win to announce Macpro certification now that couldn't wait for engineering to go through all the options... Nitris DX is kind of the flagship I/O isn't it? Again who cares when a solution is found in a few days/weeks/months, or already has been found by Magma, but the message creates a.."huh?" over here."
