    Animation

Hi. We are running MC 7.0.3 with Mavericks. We are an animation studio and we want the best possible output for HD broadcast and dcp cinema.

We are experimenting with the following:

Render dpx files (out of a comp programe called Nuke) with linear 10bit colour information.

Convert those files in Resolve (lite) to MXF files

    Finish our final edit tweaks

Bring in the Avid edit back into Resolve

Point resolve at the original dpx files and use an sRGB LUT to view.

Create Quicktime masters etc from resolve.

Can anyone tell me if this process (which does work) is a good option. Should we get a 10bit monitor to view? Maybe there is a better workaround - its a pitty Avid does not see dpx files. I could render tiff files instead and take those into the avid?

    Thanks in advance

    Matt

I do not think you should be rendering out the animation as 10 Bit linear as you may get banding on gradients.

Linear needs 16 bits to avoid this.

A log Lut or even REC709 will be better.

I am sure you could render directly to an Avid friendly (i.e. that fast imports) 10 bit codec, even uncompressed, from Nuke.

    Re: Animation

    Thanks so much David

I have not seen any banding on the 10bit yet, but I'll keep an eagle eye out for it. Rendering out an Avid friendly format from nuke makes sense, but I'm also really impressed by Resolve's ability (quality and ability to link dpx files to an Avid cut).

I'll experiment with more LUTs as you suggest

    Thanks

    Matt
