Avid H.264 MFX Proxy for offline

Currently using the old standard HD - SD offline work flow  IE we dig/transcode all HD footage to SD 14:1 for offline then conform HD in online/Uprez.

I've been considering changing work flow to DNX 36 but the file size is still limiting for large series.

Which lead me to option 2.  Create Avid H.624 MXF proxys to edit in offline and relink to hi rez master for conform.

This codec doesn't come up at all in Avid 6.5 transcode though?  And searching doesn't give me much info outside of AutoIngest and MOG.  Is it interplay specific only?  Is there a way to turn this codec on in Media Composer?

No, it isn't possible to use H264 in an MXF wrapper (H264 is already a wrapper, so the media would be 'double-wrapped' if you could!). In any case it would not be a pleasant editing experience, given the decode complexity. Sorry to say, but DNxHD36 is your best option overall. It's designed for quick, responsive editing and, although not great, the picture quality is perfectly OK for most people.

    I'd say H264 is a codec, not a wrapper.

Yes MPEG4 part 10 is a codec. what confuses things is MPEG can be a wrapper and a codec.

So you can have an MPEG transport stream and you can have MPEG codec.

    But I'd call H264 a codec

And yes it's designed to be compact and that isn't the friend of frame based editing.

I stand corrected (I think!). However, my point that MXF can't have H264 essence is still true.

Re: Avid H.264 MFX Proxy for offline

    Don't think that's true...

But I also don't want to get to caught up in the technical wording... I understand h.264 is the codec.  And also the enemy in most editing situtations.

Pretty sure Avid H.264 MFX proxy is an H.264 wrapped in op atom MXF wrapper. Making it Avid friendly. It is generaly used in Interplay enviorment and created by AirStream.  It's noted in the white papers as Transcode service only. I know avid can use it already. And I know MC can use with out interplay because I have tested 3rd pary products that make them.  IE MOG MXF Streamclip/Auto Ingest/Cinedeck.

    See link

    https://www.avid.com/US/products/Interplay-Low-Res-Encode

The root of my question is... is it possible to transcode these files in Avid without AirStream or Interplay ingest or a third party hardware solution the same way I would make a 14:1 file?

Noting also that I'm mostly completly doing file based workflows.  IE AMA link and transcode to offline resolution.  Not much tape digitizing anymore.

Re: Avid H.264 MFX Proxy for offline

To elaborate on Pat's earlier point.  H.264 is long-GOP and not editing friendly.  The GOPs can easily be 250 frames or more.  On a large, long-form project things can get very sloggy.  14:1 is probably a better offline option.  Low bitrate DNxHD ususally even better.

Re: Avid H.264 MFX Proxy for offline

I know Avid isn't always good at what it says it does but it definately says it supports this.

Listed right on the specs page...

    Native codec support:

    Avid proxy formats

    • Interplay MPEG-2 proxy, MPEG-4 proxy, 720p H.264 proxy (transcode service only)
I'm guessing since I can't find any relevent info Avid keeps this resolution limited to creation in Interplay...  Otherwise someone else would have an idea of what I'm trying to figure out.

You WERE crazy a couple of weeks ago Big Smile

The new one is an all i-frame h.264 and IMHO it's pretty ugly.  Wish there were more bitrate options -- but it works!

Re: Avid H.264 MFX Proxy for offline

With h.264 being such a slog for editing, what's a good use case for it over something like DNxHD? Is it just a space issue? Or perhaps for workflows where you are doing a low bitrate web delivery anyway?

    +1

We are sending footage over the internet to editors and the new h.264 option seemed to be the perfect solution. But even with the 2.0 Mbit version the horizontal lines are flickering. I let the editors decide if they prefer 15:1s or h264 2 Mbit and guess what: All of them preferred the oldschool 15:1s. Maybe it could be worth to increase the bitrate to get the codec interlaced? A Bitrate of 4-5 Mbit would be fine for us.

    Just my 2 cents.
