Hey there Gringo Jack, I am in the same boat I believe. Although I seem to have got the application up and running it does not seem to capture. One thing I did find out was that one has to unplug any webcams and microphones you have connected, even if they are not running. I have to say that these glitches are also discouraging me from pursuing this too far.

Avid is very specific about what components will work with their software. Take a look at the system requirements for Free DV and see how your systems compare:

While you're there, click on the requirements for Xpress DV, as they're very similar.

I could not make AvidFreeDV work with my on-board RealTek audio system. I installed a Soundblaster Audigy card, and AvidFreeDV has worked flawlessly ever since. Your error message looks very similar to what I was getting. Maybe your present sound system is incompatible?
