FCP/Premiere Editor looking to learn Media Composer: 6.5 or 7?

Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro Editor looking to get into Media Composer. Looking to suggestions if I should start with version 6.5 or 7?  Are they vastly different? Being a first time user I don't want to be learning both versions though being in the Los Angeles market would it be better to start out at 6.5?  Your thoughts much appreciated.

Re: FCP/Premiere Editor looking to learn Media Composer: 6.5 or 7?

    Hi,

They haven't released 7 yet, so nobody knows how different it will be, but if history is any guide, it won't be vastly different from 6.5.  I learned Media Composer in 1997, and while it's evolved over the years, it hasn't changed so much that I wouldn't recognize the 1997 version and be able to work on it.

    Hope that helps.

    ciao,

Lynda.com has great tutorials.  There is a bit of a learning curve making the switch but well worth it.

Thank you for the responses Carl and Tony. I've been looking at the Lynda.com and Class on Demand tutorials. With Media Composer 7 just around the corner and the learning curve I hear about Media Composer, I was thinking of just starting out with version 7. Though my passion for editing will help alleviate the learning curve. Yes

Keep that attitude, but be very aware you're going to be initially aggravated by Media Composer, I'll guarantee it. Just about everyone who comes from a point-and-click NLE such as FCP or Premiere tries to make MC act like that at first. Eventually, if you truly want to learn MC, you'll let go of those habits and start doing it the Avid way. Sounds corny, but once you start using it, you'll see what I mean.

Regarding which version to learn on, I agree with the commet above: you could learn on a 15 year old version of Media Composer and still be able to use 7 when it's released. The editing (which is what you need to learn) is virtually identical, they just throw on a bunch more features under the hood with each new release.

I would start now with 6.5 and not worry about the differences in 7.  As Carl said the differences 6.5 and 7 in actually EDITING will be minimal.

The main learning curve between 6.5 and 7 that I would anticipate will be the changes in media management for some file based media.

Re: FCP/Premiere Editor looking to learn Media Composer: 6.5 or 7?

Appreciate the support/feedback in just 24 hours! I just signed up for the 30 day trial of Media Composer 6.5. I think this is perfect timing with my kids about ready to go on summer vacation for the next 3 months(no homework to worry about Big Smile ). I'm going to set aside Final Cut Pro 7 and Adobe Premiere Pro and focus on these next 3 months on learning to manage in order to cut and tell a story, "The Avid Way".

Looking to possibly apply to the ACE Intern Program: http://ace-filmeditors.org/about-2/ace-intern-program/ Anyone in these forums that went through this program? With the exception of Avid, I believe I qualify.

It's been mentioned to pick up a copy of Avid Agility and The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook. Other suggestions for links, books, tutorials, would be great.

Also, wondering if there are any Avid events coming up in Southern CA(Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego)? I missed out a few weeks ago at the Editor's Lounge in Burbank.  Will be at Cinegear Expo at Paramount Studios this weekend if there's anything happening.

    Thanks,

Re: FCP/Premiere Editor looking to learn Media Composer: 6.5 or 7?

Just viewed lesson 16 of Kevin P. McAuliffe's Creative Cow Series: Getting Started with Media Composer 6.  I'm viewing the tutorials just to get an idea of how MC works then will actually use the raw footage from a previous project I created in FCP 7 to recreate the :30 commercial in Media Composer. I'm pretty happy that I've understood everything so far from the 16 lessons I've watched. There are 81 total lessons. Can't wait to get started.
