    60i vs 60p and MC 6.0.3

    Hi everyone,

Just bought the Sony HDR PJ790V camcorder. Will be headed off to Supai Arizona next week and am wondering if I should record in 60i or 60p considering I will be importing into MC 6.0.3. I think 60p would be the best choice but I've read it's a pain to get it into MC. I could sure use some professional opinions at this point since I don't have time to experiment. Any tips would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Layne

    Hello Layne,

MC does not support 1920x1080@60p. So i would stick to 60i, or use another editing software.

You also could transcode the 60p --> 60i with 3rd party software (ffmbc, squeeze, etc.)

    Wow! That's weird.

So I'll stick with 60i but I suppose a follow-on question is what about the future? If, perchance, MC does decide to support 60p, is 60p footage better ultimately than 60i? Seems that progressive would give better slow motion than interlaced. If interlaced is so good, why move to progressive?

I don't know if 1080p60 will get a worldwide broadcast standard, right now it's not.

And interlaced video will hopefully die with 4k.

    Stick to 60i

Be careful and test  take longer than 15 min if you transcode the 60p --> 60i with 3rd party software (ffmbc, squeeze, etc.) Take longer than say 15 min may be truncated du to spanned files on memory card.

It came as a big surprise to us that MC 6.5.2 do not import, transcode or AMA 1080p50. While FCP and Premiere Pro do.

Converting 1080p50>1080i50 using 3part proved to be trouble as well.

6,5 and the Avid J2k codec supports 1080 50p, Squeeze can convert to that codec and is included for free with the 64 bits Avid

After having imported that media into Avid using the command " ignore qtrate " conversion to 1080 50i works well using Avid itself.
