    5d mark3 footage flickery/shaky in avid symphony...

    Hi

I shoot some footage on my new canon 5d mark3 and linked to AMA on avid Symphony and then transcoded to dnxhd 175...When I play the footage in avid symphony the parts of the footage that have  more contrast flicker/shake (notice that all the footage have slow pans but the issue is not the pan itself but the objects inside the frame).

I rendered a qt movie to upload to vimeo and send it to canon (at their request) but I noticed that the problem was gone...after rendered it looks better

That makes me think that the issue si somewhere in avid symphony...either the transcoding, or just the playback..not sure exactly...

I have to add that I edited before footage from canon 5d without this issue (but usually footage was transcoded by someone else...ALso when I spoke to canon tech support they went through my video camera settings and they think my setting are ok...

    Anybody know anything about this?

I would really appreciate any help

    Thanks

What's the frame rate of the footage, and what's the format/frame rate of the project?

Do you see a Green Dot on the clip in SN? This will indicate a motion adapter is applied and the frame rate is being changed.

In the Sequence, what is the Video Quality Menu set to? It sounds like its in Draft Quality.

    Thanks for replying...

    to camoscato,

The footage is set in the camera at 24 all i.

the project is set to 23.98.

I tried setting the project to 24p but when I tried to transcode the footage is asking me to convert it to 23.98...also when I look at the footage info (AMA linked) it says 23.98 (but I know... in the camera setting is called 24 all i...)

    Also answearing Bobrusso,

No green dots on footage and the video qaulity is set to full green ( I tried with half,yellow/green too)

Might help if you post that vimeo link here so we can see what you are talking about.  ALL-I (iframe-only) may edit smoothly without any need for transcoding.  I'd be curious to know how that works for you.

Is this happening on your video monitor or PC monitor, as you might be having issues with field order?

Re: 5d mark3 footage flickery/shaky in avid symphony...

Sorry I've been for hours talking to the canon tech support...they finally are telling me that the canon 5dmark3 can't handle panning without flickering!...The weird think is that doesn't always look the same...

anyway here is the link (on the avid looks way worst but you can have an idea if you look specially at the white objects)

    https://vimeo.com/62621099

I also noticed that it looks the worst on my hplp2475 lcd monitor ... so maybe field order is the problem? or refresh rates?

    @SMRpix :

How can I edit without transcoding? if you mean from the AMA it doesn't work well...very slow... I guess I could try moving the files to another drive (the original files are on my c drive right now)?

    Thanks

We shot the film I directed with the 5D Mark3.

    Transcoded it to DNxHD 120.

    I can't see anything strange.

    That was on 25p.

the only part on your film you have panning (the rest is all cut too fast to tell) is at 00:28 and I can see some of the same flickering on the windows..is not as bad as in my footage though...

    I'll keep testing and troubleshooting...

Any info on this I'll appreciate it

Re: 5d mark3 footage flickery/shaky in avid symphony...

Recording 23.98/24p with a video camera has the same issues as a 24p film camera when panning quickly.

I'm trying to dust off some info from film school; our brain fills in the gaps between each frame. During a fast pan these gaps become easy to see and distracting. The trick is to follow an object that's moving through the frame, this way the object will not be "panning" relative to the camera. Once I learned this, I've never be able to not see it.

American Cinematographer Manual has details on fast a camera can be panned.

The compression added by the H.264 codec only compounds the issue.

Re: 5d mark3 footage flickery/shaky in avid symphony...

I know what you are talking about (I used super8 and 16mm cameras before) and that is somewhat pleasant...this 5dmark3 issue I'm noticing is not the same...

With film you get a blur when moving fast...

In my case I didn't pan too fast and I'm getting this flickering/shaking specially on the lighter objects

By what you are saying then you won't be able to shoot panning on an empty building for example..So I spent  $4k on a camera that dictates what's your topic...It doesn't makes sense to me

My main question now is if really all5dmark3 have the same issue or I got a defective one? (I can still return it) or it's a problem with avid and the 5d all i codec or the avid transcoding etc...

I believe you're seeing the L-GOP - H.264 codec fall apart. There's simply too much information for the codec at the data rate.

I don't believe this is an Avid issue with the DNx175 codec. It's doing a frame for frame transcode. Try uncompressed HD or switch the format to RGB and transcode to DNx444 or uncompressed RGB.

    Hi Bob,

I just tried what you suggested...dnx444  still have the exact same issue ...uncompressed is actually even more shaky

    Any other ideas?

Michael, can you post a link to an original, unedited source clip straight from the SD card?

I can take a look at that see if can tell what's going on.
