    Timecode issue at 23.976 proj

Hi everyone! I'm having a timecode issue with my project. I have a bunch of RED Epic 5k files which I transcoded to Quicktime ProRes LT 720p/23.976 with TC burn-ins.  Everything runs smooth except one thing: at frame 500th (plus-minus couple of frames) MC holds a frame for one frame (essentially giving me two identical frames in Source Monitor window), then runs to the end on clip with 1 frame later than TC in original frame.  Basically it looks like MC inserts one extra frame at frame 500th.  Quicktimes are AMA-linked. I'd prefer to keep them AMA, because i have like 120GB of them.  Timecode readings above the composer window are correct thought.  Please help!

You should really stay away from 720 for things like this. And for editing in MC it is just as fast - and much more solid - to have RedCine-X create 1080p DNxHD MXF media. No need to import nor AMA-link after that.

Are you in a 23.976 project?

What does the FPS column in the bin say? If you splice such a shot into the timeline, does it ger a green dot effect automatically? That would indicate a framerate difference.

If you check the QT file in QT player, is the same repeated frame visible there?

    Thanks for reply Job!

Why is 720 is not a good choice? I thought it is a good trade off between file size and pic quality. Whats wrong with 720?

Also, DP and Director both wanted to see dailies, thats why ProRes seemed to be a good choice. They have FCP7 and editing supposed to be on MC.

Both Premiere Pro and FCP7 see those files without problems.

First of all, the 720 format does not come with 24TC, since it is a 25/30 format. 720p23.976 is a fabricated format that carries 23.976p inside a 60i stream.

In 1920x1080p, Avid has DNxHD36 which looks way better than the data rate suggests.

On any job that takes more than a day or two, I'd stay away from AMA. It'll slow your system down. Avid native MXF media is far more solid.

But the main Q: is the repeated frame in QT player as well? What's the framerate MC detects? Any green dots?

Oh, didnt know this about 720! THANKS A TON! Will stay away from it if possile. QT player diplays it correctly, no duplicated frames. MC sees it as 23.976 no issues also (except duplicated frame, only one frame). Just checked on second machine (MC 6.5.0)--same thing. Duplicated frame and TC off 1frame after frame 500.

    No green dots on timeline.

One thing that bogs me: why 500 frames? Whats so magical in it?

Are you on 6.5.0.1 or on the original 6.5.0?

I've just transcoded to DNxHD MXF 720p 23.976 and MXF 1080p 23.976 -- they don't have such problem.

Looks like it was a ProRes import/AMA-linking problem.

    @Dmitry ~

I've recently run into a similar issue - a duplicate frame about 500 frames into my timeline.

Can you share what OS X version you were using when you had this issue?

    Thanks!
