AAF edit protocol? on or off?

Can someone explain what the "AAF Edit Protocol" button does when making an AAF export.

Should I select it when I am making AAF audio files to be opened in Protools?

It is my understanding that AAF edit protocol allows you to include AMA media in a Linked AAF. I do not know if there are other functions of the edit protocol.

I don't know about AMA (never heard that before, don't think you can even AAF-export AMA sources), but AAF Edit Protocol allows for >2GB file sizes.

    Manual says:
"AAF Edit Protocol exported files can exceed the 2GB size limit. AAF Edit Protocol compliant files are not compatible with Pro Tools v7.1 and earlier."

    Some more info here.

    Hi Job,

I read the same bit in the manual. It just seems that a "protocol" should allow for some extra information to go across but I can't see any difference between the two exports.

I always have an issue with audio that has EQ/Audiosuite applied. If I send a clip with EQ to protools they get the effect media in the timeline but no actual effect to edit. As far as I can tell there is no automatic way for ProTools to step back to the original media. I usually end up sending a duplicate sequence without the rendered effects so they have that option

I was hoping that the "edit protocol" may help with this.

This quote in the document you posted would seem to suggest that it should be more efficient.

"AAF is founded on the concept that everything necessary to create a finished program can be represented as composition metadata, with references to the media essence. By separating compositional metadata from media essence,"

Unfortunately, I don't have Protools to be able to run any tests.

Re: AAF edit protocol? on or off?

It works well with AMA in my experience.  Wrapped up a 50 minute Alexa show recently.  After cutting in DNx36, I relinked to the PR4444 files, then exported an AAF for the color correct in Davinci.  Everything went thru perfectly.  They loaded the AAF and it relinked to all of the Quicktimes without a hitch.

My understanding of AAF protocol is that it allows certain keyframes to go thru on some filters used with audio (and with effects as stated earlier), but don't quote me on that

Does anyone have luck with Audiosuite plugins getting through to ProTools- tried various settings in the AAF dialogue and ProTools editor not seeing the effects so that he could use our settings as a starting point.

It would be essential that you tick the box to include effects when exporting from MC, as well as tick the box to include effects when importing in PT.

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.
