    Re: HD closed-captioning

You cannot wipe the CC. It ISN'T part of the picture. It is metadata that is dragged along.

    Re: HD closed-captioning

Okay, following this thread and other reading, I'm still not certain I can insert picture on a captioned tape if there are no captions on the shot that I'm fixing? Is the data in the compressed stream on HDCam "in line" with the picture? If I just insert picture with no data does it screw up the captioning information after my 3 second insert shot?

I've got a post supervisor telling me to do it but I'm not sure.

It will screw up your captioning. Don't do it.

Apparently you can turn off the CC data coming into the deck, but I don't know that means it won't blow away the existing data.

    Re: HD closed-captioning

I've had a few captioned HDCAM tapes with video hits and I replaced the bad video with a non-captioned source.  You'll probably loose the captioning for the shot you're replacing and maybe for the following shot.  So I think (not positive) that the captioning information slightly precedes the picture/audio. I'm not sure by how much (SD is usually between 1 and 2 seconds, I would think that HD may be slightly less).  Also, the first line of captioning after the insert point may be slightly garbled.  But after that point, the captioning should return to normal.

I've only done this about 3 times, so I can't be positive of your results. Obviously, it would be best if you could make a clone before you experiment.

    Re: HD closed-captioning

You need to check your deck settings to see if it's set to record Vanc CC.  Check the HDCAM VANC Packet Select Menu for HDCam.  You should set ANC1 to LINE1 (D)  TO 09, ANC1 LINE2 (D) TO 572, ANC1 DID (H) TO 61 AND ANC1 SDID (H) TO 01.  Al the other values are set to 0's .  For HDCamSr check the HDCAM-SR META DATA LINE SELECT

    Meta Data 1(1080)  : Line 09

    Meta Data 2(1080)  : Line 19

    Meta Data 3(1080)  : Line20

    Meta Data 1(720)  : Line 09

    Meta Data 2(720)  : Line 19

    Meta Data 3(720)  : Line20

As far as I can tell this should allow for the proper recording of the CC anc. data.  Whether your system preserves it in the Avid is up to the model.  My understanding is it works in adrenaline and nitris dx.  On an SR-5500 these are located in the "Others" alt Metadata menu.  Not sure where on other decks but I believe the names of the menus should be the same or at least similar.  Oh what am I saying this is Sony so who knows where the different engineering teams decide to put stuff.  Sad

    Re: HD closed-captioning

You need to reread his post John. He said the shot he will be inserting has no captioning. The question is can he leave the existing captioning on tape when inserting other video.

    Re: HD closed-captioning

As far as I know there is no way to maintian what's on tape.  I guess I was mixing this in with another thread where the Nitris DX wasn't maintaining captioning but it turned out to be the record deck was not set to rerecord the anc. data.  My understanding is the Nitris DX and adrenaline will maintain the CC anc. data for capture and reoutput.  I believe there can even be some effects that won't mess it up.  If that is the case perhaps the old wipe between the captured CC'd clip would work.  If the Anc data which is on line 9 and 572 in HDCam in the vertical interval I wonder if the wipe effect is one that wouldn't effect the anc data.  I don't have any HD decks or CC to check this on.  Since the Anc data is recorded as metadata in the vertical interval the SD trick might work but I have a lot of doubts and no equipment to test with.
