Conflicting Avid advice regarding Turbo Boost and C State

Hi guys,

I'm confused as to whether or not I need to disable Turbo Boost and C State on my Dell T5500. My processors are only 2.4 gig hex cores as oppossed to the recommended 2.6 gig ones, so the boost would be nice if possible.

The reason for my confusion is, in the T5500 slot configuration guide it recommends turning them both off for all Dell Workstations, but gives no explanation as to why that might be.

Then in a recent article about popping sounds on USB sound devices they go on to say;

Avid evaluated the Intel Turbo Boost Technology on the Z-series systems and felt it was not in our best interest to turn it off across the board. In addition, up to this point all qualification work has been done with Turbo Boost enabled by default, and future qualifications will also be done with Turbo Boost enabled.

Disabling turbo boost does not break Media Composer or NewsCutter functionality, however disabling it is exclusively for users utilizing USB attached audio I/O devices."

So is it safe to run with these settings, providing I don't use a usb sound device? I'm loathe to turn them off, if not totally necesary as I will take a performance hit in some programs.

To add to the confusion, the knowledge base article saying it's ok was only released 6 days before the latest slot configuration guide that says it isn't ok. Which should I be listening to?

It would be great for an Avid voice to chip in here and explain what the potential pitfalls might be

Avid Symphony patch is full install on Mac OS?

I'm on the verge of crossgrading a FCP 7 license to Avid Symphony and would like to check if the Symphony patch is a full install on Mac OS as Media composer is? The issue is complicated at my end as the computer I'm installing onto does not have have internet connection so de-authorising the software is a pain.

If I buy the download from the Avid online store do I first have to install the Symphony 6.0.1 register it and then de-authorise it and remove it before then installing the Symphony 6.0.1.1 patch. This, I guess, would be the situation with Media Composer on Mac OS. Is there any way to avoid installing and de-authorising the intial Symphony 6.0.1 software?

I've only ever worked with MC on the Mac before and always installed from a box of disks and not a downloaded file.

I can register the software on my desk computer as I've done many times before but de-authorising usually involves borrowing someone's iPhone and tethering its internet link.

I'm hoping there may be an update in the wind that will support OS 10.7.4 as that's the version of Lion I have waiting on the HD for the Symphony software. So do I have to install the original downloaded file first? Does Symphony on Mac operate as Media Composer on PC basically overwriting patches rather than complete installs that require de-authorising and removal.

MC6 PC to MC5 Mac titles blank

I just moved a project from a PC using MC6 to a Mac running MC5. And I can't edit any titles. I open the title tool and it is blank. And if the title isn't rendered it just shows as blank in the timeline. When I try to edit the title it skips the dialog to let me use Marquee, even though I really don't want to use Marquee. Any help?

Install Avid FX?

I just upgraded my trial version of 6.0 to the real thing. Nowhere in my install or in my confirmation email did I see a serial number to allow me to install Avid FX. Where do I find this?

audio punch in nc10 not visible

when we try to open the audio punch in in our avid nc10 nitris the punch in tool never comes visible. Did we do something wrong? Or what has happened? I have the same problem on two nc10 nitris systems.

Sorenson Squeeze 8.5 is out...

...and it seems to be free for people running Squeeze 8, there's a catch however, as it comes in two flavours: plain Squeeze and Squeeze Pro, the latter being a paid upgrade, the former missing a bunch of features, being DNxHD encoding one of the missing features, see this chart. As I understand it Squeeze 8.5 does not encode straight DNxHD files, but it still should be possible to encode DNxHD QuickTime files, or else the plain Squeeze wouldn't be a good companion to MC; can anyone confirm this?

How flexible is MC6 with encoding MXF files?

Hi,

Got this spec from Sony - can Avid MC6 encode this exact file spec?

I can get 95% there with Adobe Media Encoder - but it's a preset that won't allow me to make any manual changes. The main issue I'm having is that my files are encoding at 15 frame GOP in with the Adobe Encoder, as opposed to the 12 frame GOP that Sony require. I also can't change any of the other GOP settings (e.g. to make it closed GOP).

I haven't used Avid since Avid Xpress 4.3 - but I'd purchase it if it can meet this exact file spec, as it's an ongoing requirement. Anyone know for sure? Thanks!

P.S. - I tried to download a trial of MC6 but the e-mail never arrived with the link. :/

AVCHD AMA Transcoding

Hi, I'm a recently graduated student new to the industry and recently bought myself an entry level AVCHD camera ( a Sony MC-2000E). I've looked through other threads for the answer to my question, but have left confused and none the wiser.

Basically, I'm wondering what the best settings are on Avid 6.0 for transcoding AVCHD files from AMA or import. I've read about transcoding them to DnxHD but when I click the consolidate/transcode button, that's not one of the options.

As I said, I'm very new to this and what little experience I have are with Panasonic P2 cameras where I would just consolidate the files so I am unsure on the best results for transcoding.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Very Hot Quadro 4000. Is that normal?

Hi guys,

I have a dual Hex core T5500 with a Quadro 4000 card and I'm a bit concerned about the temperatures it seems to run at.

I currently have nothing open but this browser window and it is running at 72% This seems incredibly hot!

I'm using msi afterburner to monitor my temps. Should I be concerned? What kind of temperatures are others experiencing?

Batch Import XDCAM Assertion & Bus Error

Have just upgraded to 5.5.3.3 and we're again getting errors on Batch Importing XDCAM clips which cause MC to crash entirely.

We had this problem a few versions ago and i've always held off upgrading because it is such a pain - has anyone ever got to the bottom of it ?

AMA is off, we don't use it much.

At first i thought it was not liking going into an old project but it won't even Batch Import into a project i made last month.

USB/MIDI control surface and MC

Tonight, I bought my first control surface. I won't say what model it is until later otherwise you might not read any further.

I've really missed having a mixing console for my audio work, so I got it for use with Sonar. It took little time to set up and get working in Sonar so I did some rough mixes on several songs. It was so much easier than doing the same thing with the mouse and keyboard. Ugh. I'm glad I won't have to do that again.

Once I was through running this thing through its paces in Sonar, I decided to see if I could get it to work in MC. With a little experimenting (which also didn't take long), I found that if I set MC as if the Digi 002 was connected and if I set the control surface to its factory-loaded "scene" 4 (one of 4 sets of preset configurations which are user-programmable), this unit would control level with the faders and panning with the knobs in MC's Audio Mixer. With data on what control messages are used by other functions on the Digi 002, I could program other functions on this controller.

Now, to the make and model of this unit. I had written it off myself based on what I had read online about it. It looked far too small and it was "far too inexpensive" to be any good from what I could tell. When I looked at one up-close and operated the faders and knobs, I decided that it was much better than I had thought. The faders are very smooth - about as smooth or smoother than those on the MCI recording/mixing console I used at the studio. What I bought for about $60 is a Korg nanoKontrol. Yep, I know that sounds like it's no good but for anyone who doesn't have $1000, $5000, $10000 or more for a Mackie or a Digidesign, this one is worth a look. It has 9 control strips and transport controls. The 9 strips have a fader, a knob and 2 buttons. Multiple units can be connected (USB, powered by the bus) to add to the number of channels available.

And, no, this isn't supported by Avid. This is just a tip from someone who's already taken a shot at doing things "on the cheap."

NanoKontrol with mc?

Got a question.

Can anyone tell me if the nanoKONTROL USB-MIDI Controller works well with mc? I need a small controler with faders just to make the audio myself and quicker.

Is it just plug & play? Open the audio mixer, change to the LIVE option and start using the faders?

Is there a thread on this?

I do have a 45 miutes sequence in 1920 x 1080 23,98 FPS.

Whenever I try to export this sequence I do get the a.m. error message.

All clips are P2 AMA linked into the project.

Looks like the problem is somewhere in the audio part.

Hi All

Weirdly my MC6 UNACTIVATED last night and my license control wont launch. Cant reinstall because i can't deactivate anywhere. cant run trial FAILED ACTIVATING TRIAL and cant activate cause get AVID LICENSE CONTROL NOT INITIALIZED.

Any help/ Hectic deadline on this edit and no avid to work on.

Center keep Size to Pillarbox/Letterbox

Hello.

We have a lot of RED material from a movie transcoded in 36 NDxHD

The original media from RED is 4k 2.33 format

The RED material was set (i think, by the AVID default settings) in "center keep size", so it crop a bit from sides.

We transcode all the material and then realize it was croping part of the image. If we put the RED material in Pillarbox/Letterbox by reformat in the bin column menu, but when we try to make the same with the MXF files, the reformat setting changed to "Stretch" and if we change it doesn´t change in the image, like it was compresed with the center keep size...

The editor star to edit the film some weeks ago and now they whant the to reconvert the RED material with the pillarbox/letterbox to see all the frame.

it´s possible to make this? would the old subclips relink to this new mxf material?

I made some proves with a pair of clips... but it don´t directly relink...

do you know how can i force to relink?

I purchased Studio 15 as an upgrade to 12 a few months ago. I have nothing but problems getting the software to work properly! My computer is near 3 "terabytes" so I don't think that memory is a problem. I bought the "complete training for Pinnacle Studio 114 & 15" and can find no suggestions on that DVD.

So, I purchased the $10.00 phone incident support and they instructed me to uninstall the product and reinstall because I continuously get "not responding" message and the many of the upgraded features I purchased were simply not there. So, I decided to upgrade to Avid Studio, thinking that this software would bypass all of these problems: Guess what? The same *** problems!!! No I have two (2) software's that do NOT work.

This software sucks and the support is lower than worthless. I asked them several times to call me at a certain time and that they would take control of the software to see where the problem is: it has been weeks and I get no email or phone calls. I have asked them multiple times via email (my phone activation does NOT work anymore!).

Is anyone out there interested in filling a class action law suit against these bozos? I would like to bring this issue to the forefront of publicity so others do NOT have to go through this impossible frustration.

GOPRO Workflow

We're shooting a ton of gopro footage and I'm trying to find the best tapeless workflow for it. Since the clips don't have timecode or tape names associated to them, and the H.264 codec isn't nice with Avid, and we don't have enough space on the Unity to transcode and work at full DNxHD quality... can someone please recommend what to do?

upgrading from Xpress Pro 5 to Media Composer 3

I just ordered a used copy of Media Composer 3 that i wish to install on the same syatem as i currently have Xpress Pro 5 installed. They each have their own dongle. I'm pretty sure i will need to uninstall Xpress first. is it necessary to deactivate the lisence? I am an audio engineer and not very well versed in the workings of Avid. i use it mostly to create mxf media out of quicktimes for use in Pro Tools with a Mojo. Will my project files and bins be erased when uninstalling Xpress? is thete anything important i need to know to uninstall xpress and install MC? system is a 2009 Macbook running Win XP via bootcamp.

Avid DVD...a Future?

So it seems that Rovi, who purchased Roxio along with Parent Sonic Solutions has sold the consumer segment of Roxio to Corel.

Scenarist, and BD Powerstation has remained with Rovi. BD Powerstation sells for around $1400us, uses the core GUI of the Legacy App, DVDit, adds some pro tools.

No mention of the base product DVDitHD.

Development of the base product has been stagnant for some time...another reason to sniff around CS6 (Encore) ?

multicam gang is locked...

Hello... So, I have a project, set on 'Private' but with all files linked to an external drive. I haven't edited on this for about a month, and now that I've gone back, it says "Exception: A Serious Error has Occurred", and won't allow video monitoring. Also: some files in the bins are corrupted, and relinking makes no difference. I've looked about online and tried different things: deleting user settings, copying all files into new bins, etc. Nothing.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very thankful...

I'm using 5.5.3 on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.7 with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core.
