Because I assumed V5 would run on 10.5.8, I deleted my 2.8.X -- then discovered only 10.6.4 would work, so I installed 5.0.1 on my wife's new 10.6.4. I have 2.7 on disk WITH dongle and have 5 simple questions:
1) What is the latest version prior to V3?
2) Where can I find V2.8.x because the earliest at the download center is V3?
3) Do I need anything to prove I can download V2.8.x?
4) Do I need to install V2.7 before downloading V2.8.x? (I would think not since I assume I need to uninstall 2.7 before installing v2.8.)
5) Do I have do anything with the dongle going from 2.7 to 2.8?
All registered users of Avid Xpress Pro version 4.x qualify for either the version 4.6 software (PC) or the version 4.8.4 software for Mac OS X 10.4.2 (Tiger) update. These updates, available via download, include the v4.6 application for Windows XP or the v4.8.4 application for Mac OS X, README files, and installation instructions. After installing one of the Avid Xpress Pro updates, you may also want to download and install the items found in the corresponding goodies.zip file. The goodies download includes plug-ins for use in Avid Xpress Pro plus demos of third-party software that will allow you to get more out of your editing system.
XPro 4.8.4 is the same software as MC 2.8.4 and your dongle will dictate the options but the interface and documentation will read as XPro. Either that or contact Avid support directly and someone there should be able to FTP MC 2.8 to you
HTH
Sorry -- I'm talking about Media Compser.
Latest version before MC 3 is MC 2.8.4.
In the download center, which you can access if you have an active support contract, the oldest verion of MC you can download is 1.3.1. So MC 2.8.4 is available for download there.
And if your dongle is a 2.7 one it will need to be upgraded. You can only upgrade to MC 5 at this moment but from other forum users I've heard that a MC 5 dongle will activate MC 2.7 and 2.8 as well.

1) If one doesn't have a contract, how does one get old upgrades?
2) One needs to upgrade the 2.7 dongle to go from 2.7 to 2.8.4?
tommix:1) If one doesn't have a contract, how does one get old upgrades?
That will we difficult through the official path.
tommix: 2) One needs to upgrade the 2.7 dongle to go from 2.7 to 2.8.4?
Yes and this is your main problem. If you upgrade your dongle I'm sure that Avid or some forum users like myself can help with supplying the older version.
I know you are running MC. Avid did not and does not write code separately for XPro. MC 2.8.4 is the same software as XPro 4.8.4. If your dongle is licensed for 2.8.x it will also run XPro 4.8.x. The application will show XPro as you launch but functionally will run as MC. Hope I am not confusing you
I missed your last comment stating the equality.
My Dongle is 2.8.4 and was running fine until I deleted MC in false preparation for V5 which I bought.
I've trying to restore from Time Machine, but running into an initilization errror -- see my other post.
So, I'll look for 4.8.4.
Thank you.

Tommix, don't you still have your original install disks for 2.8.4?

And by the way, Media Composer versions all the way back to 1.3.1 are available at the download center.
No discs except my original 2.7 because I'm on vacation all summer away from all my old computer stuff.
This is where I end-up when I follow the links on the Avid home page:
http://www.avid.com/US/support/downloads
This link stops at v3. I'll try your link.
Tommix:It's somewhat convoluted to get to (and it desparately needs to be simplified) but here's how to find it:
1) Click on the download center home page link and sign in to your account.
2) From the "My account" page, click on "Support and Services"
3) Under Media Composer Support, click "downloads"
4) On the "Download Center for Avid Video Products", click on "click here to go to download center"
5) On the Avid product list page, scroll down and click on "Media Composer"
You will then be on the page in my screen grab.
Thank you Larry!
I'm downloading now. A bit slow on ADSL at my lake cabin, but at least I'm on my way.
This would be a good sticky -- "Looking for an old version of MC?"
