  • How to upload your videos to Avid Community

     

    Adding your videos to Avid Community is a great first step to promoting your demo reel or getting feedback from other creative professionals on your latest project. Here's a quick guide to getting your videos uploaded.

     

    1. Start in the Community Videos section.

     

    2. Click on the Upload your video graphic.

     

     

    3. Select a category from the scrolling list. Only one category is allowed per video.

     

     

    4. Enter a descriptive title for the video.

     

    5. Enter a detailed description of the video's content. HTML is allowed in this field. The description will appear on the video's overview page at the top of the right-hand column.

     

    6. Click the Upload Video File button. Using the Browse button, select the media asset on your computer, then click the Save button.

     

    7. Enter the total run time of the video.

     

    8. Select a checkbox next to every product name that was used to create your video.

     

    9. Use the Select Tags button to find topics that describe your video. Or, add your own by typing them in the text box.

     

    10. Review the Video Upload Agreement. If you agree, click the checkbox next to "Important", then click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

     

    All set!

  • How to encode your media for Avid Community Videos

     

    You might showcase a demo reel on your profile or add a screencast to a tutorial. In either case, here are guidelines when encoding media for upload to Avid Community Videos.

     

    File Type: Your output should always be an Adobe Flash Video (.flv) file. Although the site will accept a variety of file formats for upload, you'll achieve the best results and avoid a transcode by following these basic settings.

     

    Codec: If you have it available, use the On2 VP6 Pro codec. If not, Sorenson Spark Pro codec. MP3 codec for the audio. Avid Community currently does not support H.264 for Flash video.

     

    Data Rate: Total data rate for the combined video and audio should not exceed 1,000 Kbps. If the total bit-rate exceeds 1Mb, it will automatically be transcoded to a lower bit-rate during upload.

     

    Frame Size / Rate: 640x480 for 4x3 content, 640x360 for 16x9 content. Recommend frame rate is to leave it same as source. However, feel free to adjust down if you need to get the total file size lower.

     

    Total File Size: You output should not exceed 50MB in file size. Otherwise, it will be rejected during the upload.

     

    Feel free to fine tune frame rate, data rate, and other settings in your encoding software of choice based on the type of video content you're encoding. If you follow the basics above, your uploaded videos will appear as high quality as possible when embedded in a tutorial or featured at the top of your portfolio.

  • New editing systems, Digidesign, Sorenson, Smartsound and more join Community Tips and Tutorials

    Starting today--in Avid Community Tips and Tutorials--are brand new categories for classifying your uploads.

     

    The goal of this update was not only to recognize our many customers who are already creating great content with the latest generation of Avid editing systems, but also to recognize the role of the multi-tasking professional editor. Creating DVDs, mixing audio, motion design and multimedia compression for many are no longer highly specialized tasks to be handed off. To that end, we have added categories for tips and tutorials that involve our editing suite components and categories for professional audio post production. Notable additions include:

     

    Products:

     - Avid Media Composer Software, Mojo DX and Nitris DX

     - Avid DS (replacing DS Nitris)

     - Digidesign Pro Tools and Pro Tools|HD

     

    Editing Suite Components:

     - Boris Continuum AVX

     - Sorenson Squeeze

     - Avid FX

     - SmartSound Sonicfire Pro

     

    A few classic camera formats were added to the mix (DV, HDV, DVCPRO) along with the very latest: RED.

     

    Finally, to round out the "Features" column, DVD Authoring, File-based workflow, and MetaFuze have all been added.

     

    Keep those tips and tutorials coming, and be sure to check off all the Products, Formats, and Features that apply.

     

    Bonus Tip: Each category comes with its own RSS feed. Use your favorite feed reader to stay on top of the latest upload to that category. Simply click the RSS link next to the tag name (highlighted below in red).

     

     

  • How to add a video to your Community Tips and Tutorials

    Have a screencast you'd like to share with the Community? Here's a quick guide to creating a Community Tip or Tutorial that includes a video clip.

     

    1. Start in the Community Tips and Tutorials section, click the Contribute Your Tips & Tutorials graphic.

     

     

    2. Enter any text you'd like to include in the Title and Body.

     

    3. In the Body, place your cursor where you want the video to appear. Then in the toolbar, click the Insert Media button (to the left of the happy face).

     

    4. Click the Browse button.

     

    5. Click the Videos tab.

     

     

    6. Select the name of the category, then the video you've already uploaded.

     

    7. Enter a width of 640 and height of 500 (or 380 for 16x9) under the Option tab. The extra 20 pixels is an adjustment for the height of the playback controller.

     

     

    8. Click the OK button (lower right-hand corner, you may need to scroll down a bit)

     

    9. You'll see a bracketed line of code in the Body. This indicates where your video will be displayed.

     

    10. Finally, click the Submit button.

     

    All done!

  • Subscribe and share your favorite Avid tutorials on YouTube

    Both classic and brand new video tutorials ranging from professional music production with Pro Tools to using the Panasonic HVX200 camera with Avid editing systems are now on the avidtechnology channel on YouTube. Quick shortcut to get there is Avid.com/YouTube.

     

    Add us as a Friend or subscribe and share the tutorials with your team.  Videos of a similar theme are organized into Playlists. Most of the videos have been added at high resolution, so be sure to select the "Watch in High Quality" link in the lower right-hand corner of the video when applicable.

  • Community Studio: Joining the Community & Writing a Post

    Avid Community--the web site powered by media pros and enthusiasts--is open to everyone. All you need to get started collaborating and contributing is to become a member. Becoming a member is free, takes less than a minute and only requires a valid email address.

     

    Let's get started with this Community Studio tutorial by joining the Community and writing our first post in the Forums.

     

     

    We'll start by clicking the join link in the upper-right hand corner of the site. That takes us to the registration page. From here, we'll need to select a sign-in name. A sign-in name will be used to identify you across the site, as a handle on Forum and Blog posts, as well as your profile page. Some members choose to use their real names to promote their freelance career, their company names to promote their business, or a pseudonym to remain anonymous. Which ever your choice, you can enter it here...in my case, it's my full name.

     

    Next, enter a valid email address and re-enter it in the third box. You will receive your Community password at the email address you submit. This email address will never be publicly visible, it will only be used by Avid to communicate information related to Avid Community and for other members to send private messages through the site. Other members will not see or know your email address.

     

    Finally, select your time zone, review the site terms, and check the box if you agree. You will receive your password by email after clicking the Join Now button.

     

    After you receive your password by email, login to the site. The login button can be found in the upper right-hand corner. Enter the sign-in name you selected, the password you received by email and click the sign-in button. You know you're logged into Avid Community when you see your sign-in name displayed. You're now ready to participate.

     

    Let's start with our first Forum post. The Forums are primarily grouped into products and general discussions. Before you post, review the available forums to see which would be a best fit for your question. For this tutorial, I'm going to create a new post in "Test Posts" Forum and you can do the same, in order to practice.

     

    Clicking on the "Write a New Post" button takes us to the compose screen. From here we can enter the title of the post in the subject line, and the question in the main body. In future tutorials I'll cover all the options on this screen in more detail, but for now clicking the "Post" button in the lower-right hand corner makes the post we just wrote live in the Forum.

     

    If we were reading a post already written by another Community member, clicking the "Reply" button allows us to submit a respond or follow-up question to this thread. Only registered Community Members can create and reply to threads.

     

    That's all it takes to collaborate and contribute on the site powered by media pros and enthusiasts, just like you.

  • Getting started with a Community Portfolio

    Did you know your Avid Community profile page has been upgraded? We've added a new component to profiles called "Portfolios" and a place for them to be searched for and featured in the Community.

     

    Until recently, your profile page has been limited to displaying only your activity in the forums, and other basic identifying information. Now, with a Portfolio enabled, a plain profile becomes a personalized home page to promote your work. If you're just starting out in the industry, having your work presented advertising free and affiliated with a worldwide leader in professional media creation is an excellent way to separate yourself from the competition in those popular, but otherwise crowded and most often, consumer focused video sharing sites. For freelancers and other established professionals, a Community Portfolio avoids the time and money involved in building your own web site, registering a domain name, and the uncertainty of uploading your copyrighted content to a third-party who may or may not retain the right to reuse the content or sell advertising against it without your approval.

     

    In this edition of Community Studio, we'll take a look at how easy it is to power your professional career with a personalized Community Portfolio. [Text transcription follows the video]

     

    So let's get started building a Portfolio. In essence, the Portfolios feature is a quick way to organize and present your uploaded videos in a single place in the Avid Community. I'll use my account as an example. I'll select my username which will take me to my profile page. Immediately you'll see a new Portfolio section at the top. Under that section is a link to configure my portfolio. By default portfolios are disabled. Selecting the "Yes" radio button will enable the portfolio feature. Next you'll see the three videos that I've previously uploaded into Community. I'm going to select two videos to appear under the portfolio section of my profile page. The third video is a work in progress that I've asked other community members to offer their critique. Since it's not ready for prime time, I'll leave its checkbox unmarked so that it doesn't appear on my profile. Next, I'll select which video I want to feature. Featured videos are presented at the top of the portfolio section in a larger playback size. I'll click "Yes" next to the thumbnail to feature this video. Now that I'm done selecting which videos to present, and which to feature, I'll click Save, then "View your Portfolio". Viola, my own personalized home page with a unique web address and high-quality videos.
