He didn't know it, but his whole life, Nick Irons secretly wanted to do something to help his dad, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

In December 1995, Nick visited his parents on the East Coast and saw his dad taking a turn for the worse - walking with a cane. On the flight back to California he saw the Mississippi River and decided, "I will swim that. For my dad."

18 Months later on June 1 1997, he stepped in the frigid Mississippi River to swim 1550 miles from Minneapolis, MN to Baton Rouge, LA.

Many said, "You don't swim the Mississippi." Halfway down, it looked like the naysayers would be right. Nick's only hope was a stranger from Cedar Rapids, Iowa who could pilot a safety boat behind him.

Based on his award-winning book, and using present-day interviews, eclusive acces to the family's home movies, news footage, photos, and the actual navigational charts from the swim, Swim Lessons is an intimate, funny, and inspirational documentary about their incredible journey, and the lessons we can all learn along the way.

Swim Lessons: The Nick Irons Story

A film by Alex Houston

Produced by Alex Houston and Kendra Gahagan

RT: 40 minutes

If I were starting out now there's no way I would consider Avid, even knowing its long-time reputation as a great editor. Even large broadcasters are starting to move away from Avid. I think it's a shame...
