Give Kevin Smith a Stage at NAB

Only published comments... Apr 05 2011, 01:17 AM by Christine Viera

There’s been a lot of buzz about Avid at the Las Vegas SuperMeet. We’ve been excited to participate in this great community gathering. And, we lined up the noted indie filmmaker, Kevin Smith, to talk to the FCP user community.

We’re very disappointed to let you know that at the last minute the SuperMeet event organizers cancelled Kevin Smith’s talk.

Many FCP users reached out to say they’re really upset about this and want to hear Kevin speak. We hear you. We thought this was a great opportunity to have Kevin interact with all of you. The good news is Kevin will be speaking at the Avid Booth Tuesday midday, and at some other Avid activities—but attendance is limited. So we’re exploring options to find a bigger space so more of you can hear his story. What do you think? If we book it, will you come?

Let us know. Add your thoughts as a comment on this blog, or join us on Facebook and Twitter.

UPDATE: We have found a stage for Kevin Smith at NAB.

I was floored to read that Supermeet had been hijacked today.  Unless Apple plans to announce a literal Time travel feature, it's not gonna be as cool as having Kevin Smith on stage.  The whole reason I bought my ticket to Supermeet was for this event!  If I wanted to hear about the INCREDIBLY OVERDUE update to FCP, I would watch the video on apple's site that will follow.  Gimme the specs, the price, cool.  A whole evening, and bumping Kevin, and Philip Bloom?!  This update cannot be that great...  Apple's showing at last year's meet was a joke, do they have to catch up this year?  Really!?

Guys, wherever this goes, let's get Kevin on stage.  I have wanted to meet him since I saw "Clerks".  The Supermeet was rightfully becoming about the craft, not the software.  This screwed that up. I am all for Apple, and new tech, but NOT this time. Unless Steve Jobs shows up, it won't be as fun.

Avid folks, I want to know where this gets moved, and if I have to drive somebody, or lug gear to help make it happen, let me know!  Love the Avid Team, and hope you can get another venue for this REALLY cool event!  Let's get this!

I would really love to hear Kevin speak, if some other venue were arranged. I think the timing of this change is really lousy on multiple fronts, and I wouldn't blame Avid if they withdrew any future support from FCPUG events - which is a shame... Editors these days need to be competent on both platforms to survive well.

If you get him a place to talk, I will come.  One of the main reasons I bought a ticket was to hear him talk.  He's a funny public speaker.  And I like to hear more about the art of storytelling than product presentations.

And since I am working the show, I can't make the presentation he'll be giving on the show floor.

I hope you guys can find a way to put together an Avid user event and have Kevin Smith speak there. He's a really funny guy, and quite and inspiration to aspiring film makers. I know in the past few years you ran it over at the Hard Rock.

While you're at it, if you really want to steal some of the FCPx thunder, announce that you are going to open up MC 5.5 to the full line of AJA Kona and Matrox MXO2 I/O cards. Now that would create a HUGE amount of buzz and cement the Avid is Open story!

See ya at NAB!

Would love to see Kevin Smith speak and was glad I had a ticket to the Supermeet for that reason, a little bummed that it's not happening now, but I get it.  It is the FCP users group after all.

I would come see Kevin if there was a different venue, but only if it's rescheduled for a time other than the supermeet.

I'd love to see Kevin Smith.  He was the main reason I was thinking about going the Supermeet.  I don't use FCP, so, I have little interest in a three-hour Apple party.  If you could put together a super-meet for all of the editing software, I definitely would be interested in attending every year.
